The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has removed 150 beggars and needy people from Abuja's main avenues for causing environmental damage and defacing the metropolis.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, Hadiza Kabir, Secretary, FCTA Social Development Secretariat, SDS, revealed this.

SDS authorities worked with some FCT agencies to evacuate the beggars, who were mostly women and children, as well as elderly individuals, according to Ms Kabir.

The Abuja Environmental Protection Board, AEPB, Directorate of Road Traffic Services, FCT Security Department, and office of the Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Monitoring, Inspection, and Enforcement, she added, were among the authorities involved.

T,he evacuation, she claims, is part of a renewed campaign to rid the city of street begging in response to complaints about the problem.

Following directions from the FCT Minister of State, Ramatu Aliyu, that SDS should ensure their removal from Abuja, she claimed FCTA was aiming to relocate between 400 and 1,000 beggars from the capital.

According to the FCTA secretary, the administration would evacuate all beggars and place them in some of its centers for proper paperwork.
