Quran 9:5 says Then, when the sacred months have passed, kill the polytheists wherever you find them, capture them and besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every ambush. But if they repent, and maintain the prayer and give the zakāt, then let them alone. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.

it says the polythiest, not jews and Christians. the polythiests were the quraish tribe at the time of the prophet who at that time were in war with the prophet, they usually executed and tortured Muslims and forced them to denounce Islam or die. so the prophet sent some of the Muslims to a CHRISTAIN king in Ethiopia and then him and the rest of the Muslims to medina. But The polythiests still followed them to medina to start a war that is why Allah said any where you see them you should kill them. You didn't see where Allah said but if they repent we should forgive them. imagine, people who have been torturing you and killing your people, who even followed you after you left their city but they still followed you to kill you. but Allah still said you should forgive them if they repent? who on earth is that loving and most merciful, I'll tell you it's Allah, the creator of this universe and the God of all the prophets.

let's look at the verse that came after verse 5.

If any of the polytheists seeks asylum from you, grant him asylum until he hears the Word of Allah. Then convey him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.

can't you see the mercy of Allah? people who hated you, they killed your people, they followed you to another city just to fight and kill you but Allah still told you to grant them asylum and keep them safe, because they are people who do not know. Allah is the greatest.
