The obvious way to tell are few or non-existent. You can detect if a neat job wasn't done when you look at the top gasket lamination between the engine block and the top cylinder. And this is if the head gasket was changed. A car can possibly overheat without damaging anything if it is arrested on time.

Other signs are direct fan connection, cooling system leak, thermostat removal and other cooling system modifications.

The truth is, all things being intact, you can't tell a car that overheated in the past except you have a high end scan tool that can retrieve history codes (if the codes are still in the memory).

I will like to hear opinion of others on this.

very correct fellow.

Once it's fan is connected directly it has over heated in the past.

Once thermostat has been removed, it has over heated in the past

Almost any car driven in Nigeria for 5 years has over heated esp when bought as naija used

You sound angry, cool it!

Best way to know dis, is To istening when u start d engine...
It's possible one battery won't start it unless u double battery..
Also, d engine will b struggling to start, like the pressure isn't much

You know what they did. The moderators deleted my initial post. I even modify in details. We have tyrants as moderators. Moderators like Pavore9 have totally abandoned the platform. This was a man creating powerful contents for the agriculture section. They only collect money from politicians and Tonto Dike to push contents to the front page...even discouraging some real content creators. Seun is to blame by empowering fools as moderators.

Check the last time Pavore9 was on Nairaland Jan 2001

1. Check head gasket for rough sealed

2. Fan connected directly

3. Radiator changed to double cell

The best way is to simply ask the driver of the car, but it's unfortunate humans don't tell the truth anymore.

Not exactly.
They advised many car owners to connect radiator directly to prevent overheating.

The surest sign for this in Naija is to check if the fans run directly which means the thermostat has been sent to an unreturnable errand. cool

My former car overheated and nothing happened to the head gasket.

Many of them did it when the vehicle overheated.

Most cases just listen to the engine sound . If you hear a tapping sound from the engine then it has history of over heating. That’s the easiest way. There are experiences mechanics who can seal too cylinders after changing a car gasket. With perfect deals that you won’t even detect if they worked there . But they can’t stop a tapping engine sound. Not all cases of the fan is directly connected. Many people do this to help their cooling system to avoid over heating and also change their single cell radiator to double cell. All to stop unforeseen cases of overheating. But the tapping engine sound no adjustment can be done to that. Any car will overheat in Nigeria with too much traffics and all. Most people don’t watch their dashboard . If you watch daily while driving you can avert any over heating situation once your temperature rises above the middle gauge

most of them don't know anything. The reason is that intelligent people don't go into the profession in this country. The dull people are the once learning mechanic work and they don't know anything. The best brain look down on the profession.
