Well, they will have to.

1.Cost of business is rising due to the international rise in oil prices...which also affects gas.

2.Power companies are running at a loss, and even with government subsides (supposedly discontinued this year, but still around, IMHO), they still lose at least N1 trillion a year, because it is NERC, not the sector, that sets tarrifs.

3.The value of the naira is falling because we run an economy based just on the cost of crude oil...and right now , even with the rise in oil prices, we have to pay off debts, plus feed the subsidy monster...which means ....not enough forex to keep the value of the naira up.(We still have to save something too).

Ye cannot pay for power less than the cost it takes to produce power, and expect to have power 24/7. Ye have GSM because you pay for their service at the cost the GSM companies set.

Below: Page from the PwC report on power. Solving the liquidity crisis in the Nigerian power sector.

The big question should be, how can a private company that is unable to metre customers for after 8 years distribute electricity? We can pay for a cost reflective tariffs but it cannot be base on estimated billing. Why are the disco so happy to sit on estimated billing?

Because they cannot charge enough to make enough profit to pay for meters and that stuff.

By law, they operate at a loss. Operate at a loss, and then providing enough power becomes difficult.

Where they operating at a loss when they bought in 2014? Do you remember the payment of service charges in 2014? 750 for single phase monthly in respective of you having light or not. 750* just a million house will give you 750 million for distributing zero electricity. Did they complain about selling at a loss? Did they metre the customers then? Please there is no one that will borrow money to run a company at a loss so they should come and tell us what we don't know. Finally what do you think should be the right amount for us to pay for them to be profitable? And if we do pay that amount will they give you a good voltage that will not make you to incur cost on stabilizers? Stabilizers are over a 150k now.

They always have been charging at a loss.

NERC sets the tarrifs, not the DISCOS themselves. As a result, since 2014, they have not been able to make a profit. Part of their losses are covered by a subsidy (which was removed this year, allegedly)...but even with the subsidy, they were still losing money.

PwC did a good paper on the money problem. (I've posted a page from the report upthread).

At the end, if the DISCOS cannot make a profit, due to them not being able to charge at market prices...they cannot fix things, pay for things like poles , wires and transformers adequately (which is why we pay for them out of pocket) and pay enough to the GENCOS and the TCN, meaning that generation and transmission cannot be fixed adequately too.

No improvement in power supply.
Just imagine sending an estimated bill of n9000 for 2hrs of light the month of March. An increase of over n2000 for February when the power supply was a little better than March
it's a total mess my brother.

Well, DISCOS have to pay staff, and pay for improvements, and they cannot do that with their hands tied behind their back in the name of cheap power prices set by government.
