Caesarea was a town to the north of Joppa. In this town lived a Roman army officer, a captain of the Italian Regiment whose name was Cornelius. He was God fearing and all the members of his family were also devoted to God. He was very kind and generous. He spent a lot of his free time praying and helping the poor and needy.

One day, about three O'clock in the afternoon he had a vision in which he saw an angel of God coming towards him. The angel said that God had heard his prayers and seen his kindness. The angel then said:

'Now send men to Joppa and bring one Simon
who is called Peter, he is lodging with
Simon, a tanner, whose house is near the
seaside.'
