So one of the fallouts of the Russian putsch in Ukraine is a projected global recession which could mean job losses. For those that work US remote, are you working on any contingency plans to mitigate this risk?

They will just port to other countries. Japan has rolled out the red carpet. South Korea. Some European nations too. There's always gonna be options for skilled people.

Wouldn't these countries be hit also?

Well a global depression will affect everyone but devs are the factory workers of technology and tech companies and something very bad has to happen for devs to be affected. Even the layoffs at tech companies is mostly to non technical people. Netflix didn't lay off devs but they have laid off hundreds of writers, animators and all of that. Even if Netflix lays off devs expect other companies to take those devs immediately. Netflix has some of the best smartest devs in the world working for them.

I feel devs should focus on being insanely good. Tech has career security. If you lose your job it's always easy to get another. It's not like oil and gas or banking where if you lose your job you are bleeped for eternity.

I think a recession will be good news for Nigerian devs. Many companies will outsource to remote devs because it is a far cheaper option than paying devs resident in U.S. Imagine paying a Frontend, US based dev $20,000 while you can pay 2 Nigerian devs $1000 each and get better results

This is bad practice. Stop encouraging this.
Abroad based companies must pay Nigerian devs the equivalent or very similar salaries being paid to US based devs.

Meanwhile, recession ain't happening anytime soon.
California (5th largest world economy) reported an excess revenue of $49.5 billion which is simply without precedent.
Apple reported higher profits than usual.
Same with many other companies.
Even shell and other oil industries.
The US economy by all standards is moving well along.

This is why most US devs have problems getting jobs because they have to compete with blokes in developing countries who will accept low salaries instead of the salaries they deserve

How do you determine the salary “they deserve”. Surely someone in a HCOL city like LA should earn more than a LCOL city like Ibadan

Have you looked at inflation in the US? Interest rates going up. Clear indication of a possible contradiction and recession

Devs should be paid what they deserve based on their skills and the services they offer, if an American company is going to pay an American Data scientist $160k then a Nigerian Data Scientist working for the same company with similar skills and qualification deserves similar pay, just because I'm from Nigeria shouldn't make me cheap labour.

You know they pay those US resident Data Scientists those figures to cover the cost of living in HCOL locations. And they pay taxes to the US governments. 99% of Nigerian remote workers don’t pay tax in anyway or form. I am saying if you want to earn $160k then you should also be living in New York paying rent of 2k per month

Okay, I understand

How about this:
Getting paid the Nigerian equivalent of earning $160K in US,
Not #160K o grin

Lol! That already happens mostly na. Even as Independent Contractors, most Nigerian IT remote workers earn comfortably well compared to their equivalents working for Nigerian employers.

I'm not encouraging it. I'm just stating the reality. They call it location based pay lipsrsealed

Inflation is rising in the US, but I don't think a recession is near.
I might be wrong, but going by the job vacancies, stable employment rate and all, I'd bet that recession isn't coming to the US anytime soon.

True.
Even in the US, workers in San Francisco Bay are paid higher than workers in other parts of the US. This is to compensate for the high cost of living in that area.
But at least, they should pay a commensurate salary for all devs, regardless of location.

Remote work is a thing, but might never get off entirely. Google and Facebook are already telling employees to come back to the office. Same with some other top tech companies.
Developers in the US can't find it harder to get jobs than devs from developing countries. Never.

Economically there's no incentive hiring someone from a third world shithole and paying him same as someone in the same country. It does happen to but to extremely skilled devs.
