For the first time since 12 December 2004 when the Abuja stadium hosted the final match of the CAF Champions League featuring Enyimba and Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia, a Nigerian stadium will be hosting a CAF cup final.

The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo will host the 2021/22 Confederation Cup final on Friday, 20 May 2022.

This is the first intercontinental major cup final to be hosted in Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Uyo is the capital of Akwa Ibom State – the home of Nigeria’s Premier League side Akwa United FC.

Last year, the Confederation Cup final was hosted in Cotonou, Benin Republic where Morocco’s Raja Club Athletic beat Algerian side, JS Kabylie 2-1.

RSB Berkane (Morocco)

Renaissance Sportive de Berkane (Arabic: النهضة الرياضية البركانية) commonly known as Nahdat Berkane or RS Berkane for short, is a Moroccan sports club based in Berkane, Morocco. The club's football team is currently playing in the first division of Moroccan championship Botola. The club finished in 2nd place in the Botola 2 in the 2011–12 season, which led to the promotion to the first division.

The club was founded in 1938 under the name of Association Sportive de Berkane. In 1953, the club was named Union Sportive Musulmane de Berkane.

In 1966 it was renamed Union Sportive de Berkane and in the same year, a new club was founded under the name of Chabab Riadhi de Berkane.

In 1971, both teams merged to make Renaissance Sportive de Berkane (Nahdat Berkane). This merger was beneficial for the club, it entered the 1st division in 1977–78.

The RSB regained its spot in the first moroccan division in 2012, under the presidency of Fouzi Lekjaa, who ran the club since 2009.
In 2018, RS Berkane won its first ever title, the Moroccan Throne Cup.

Berkane have been making steady progress over the years, culminating with their first continental silverware. After their Confederation Cup campaign ended at the quarter-final stage in 2018, they went further in 2019 and lost the final to Zamalek.

In 2020, Renaissance Sportive De Berkane was crowned Confederation Cup champions, clinching their first continental title in their history. The club beat Egyptians Pyramids 1–0 in the final game at Moulay Abdellah stadium in Rabat.

In the semi-final, which was played at Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, “RSB” beat countrymates “HUSA”, Hassania d’Agadir 2–1. The two goals of the qualified team were a 20th and a 61st minute penalty kicks scored by the same player, Mohamed Aziz.

The CAF confederation cup title won by “Renaissance Sportive De Berkane” yesterday is the seventh of its kind for Moroccan football and the fifth if the new format of the competition is being considered.

RS Berkane’s 2019–20 season was impressive as the Oranges were chasing for the domestic league title up until the final fixtures. They eventually finished third on the national league table (Botola Pro) with 57 points, three points behind champions Raja Casablanca. Additionally, they only lost three games out of 30, the lowest in the league

Yea you are right bro

1st Nov 2009 at Dan anyam stadium
heartland won TP Mazembe 2-1

And of course TP Mazembe the favourite then went on to win 1-0 and took the cup.

However that can not be massive as what we have here, a neutral stadium in a one leg final live here in Nigeria

One leg final is new in Africa, this should be the second season,
Rumor has it that they might revert to the two leg final

What's your take?
One leg or two leg final

when it comes to continental competition, this north Africa clubs surely knows how to win it, maybe because of their passion for their league n football bcox dey hardly follow European football like the rest of Africa..
I see berkane beating pirates to take d trophy even if I want pirates to win because of our defender in its team..

one leg final on a neutral ground is the real deal, dt 2 leg final home n away is outdated n very boring for the fans to follow up..

yes it is...but placing finance ahead of wat d fans want would kill d love of the game in the long run..
football is different and better wen watching a one leg match or final than a two legged tie...
the one leg would create more tension which makes d game serious than that of two leg..

Our NPFL should sit up.
North Africans always dominating African Club football. South Africa doing well of late.

Akwa Ibom promises hitch-free and fun-filled final experience

Organisers are applying final touches in some areas in Uyo ahead of Friday's long-awaited final of Africa’s second-biggest club competition, the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.

The showdown between South Africa's Orlando Pirates and Morocco's RS Berkane will be played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in the Akwa Ibom state capital, in Nigeria and will kick-off at 20h00 local time (19h00 GMT).

Uyo and Godswill Akpabio Stadium will be the first Nigerian city and stadium to host either the one-match final of the Confederation Cup or the Champions League.

Before Uyo 2022, Nigeria previously through Lagos hosted the 1975 and 1984 CAF Champions League finals in a home and away format, followed by Ibadan in 1988 and 1996 before Aba in 2003 and Abuja in 2004, then recently Owerri in 2009 after Port Harcourt hosted the CAF Confederation Cup final in 2005.

City Presentation and Preparation

It is the first intercontinental major Cup final to be hosted in Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital and the home of Professional Football League side Akwa United.

Following the confirmation of Uyo by CAF, the locals could not hide their joy ahead of the highly anticipated Confederation Cup final, including General Coordinator of the LOC, Paul Bassey.

"Aƙwa Ibom is glad to represent Nigeria in this regard," Bassey, who doubles as Akwa United chairman told CAFOnline.com.

"This is a continental assignment and Akwa Ibom had to do it on behalf of Nigeria and this stadium apart from being one of the best in Africa, it's also the best in the country.

"When CAF came to Uyo, they saw that it was fit enough to host, and it's not only about the stadium, the Ibom Specialist Hospital is world class, then, of course, the hotels we have 5 stars. "Also the airport facility among others and then the experience because we have hosted big games before, for Uyo people, this is huge and we have that culture of coming out in a mass."

Uyo, Akwa Ibom State
Stadium and security

Launched in 2014, the Godswill Akpabio Stadium is a 30000-capacity seater modelled after the Allianz Arena in Germany and has served as the home to the Nigerian Super Eagles.

It is arguably the most beautiful stadium in Nigeria situated in Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Boulevard, Uyo and notably, referred to as The Nest of Champions. The ultra-modern sports complex boasts bulletproof VIP and VVIP areas, natural grass, high-tech floodlights, a training pitch, a helipad, and collapsible seats. For security, It has 30 emergency exit points, closed-circuit security cameras, stand by firefighting equipment and metal detectors.

Nigeria Fans 2
Fans and atmosphere

In a bold move to fill up the stands of the stadium and guarantee a high-decibel atmosphere for the final, Akwa Ibom state governor Udom Emmanuel has purchased all tickets to give to fans who wish to cheer the teams free of charge.

Explaining the move, Bassey, who was the General Coordinator for the 2017 CAF Super Cup, said: "The state government in its wisdom wants people to turn up. That's why he [Governor Udom] came out to say the state will take care of all the tickets just to make sure that people come.

"The excitement is huge, people are everywhere and want to come, it's 8 pm local time in the evening, what this means is that you can go to work, to the market go back home rest and take a shower, come with your family and watch.

"Uyo by all standards is one of the safest states in the country, it's also an advantage for Uyo, for us, the atmosphere is great, people are excited, a lot of businesses has been done, hotels are fully booked, the place is buzzing. So in the neighbouring states, Cross River, Abia State, people are anxious to come in and watch.

"That is what it is. It is novel, it is new. Kudos to Nigeria, Kudos to Akwa Ibom and we are working round the clock to deliver something everyone will be proud of."
