Earlier today, I received a call from a friend who asked me to send my account number.

Without asking questions, (me wey Sapa dy hold since last month) I sent him my account number.

After 3mins, I received the first alert of 20,000naira. Then, another, and another, totalling 100,000naira.

This was someone who yesterday, was complaining that he does not have money to purchase a recharge card.

I called him, and he told me that the money is for us (me and another friend).

He told me there was a bug in the new MTN momo.

This was someone who holds a strong religious beliefs ooooo.

I'm very sure he got more than 500,000 from the MTN momo Hack.

After ending the call, I started seeing some screenshots of people showing their alerts on their WhatsApp status (some got more than 7million).

I wonder what will be the fate of the software engineers who were implementing the feature.

This right here, is one of the dangers of becoming a software engineer that no one tells you about.

So, how much did you or someone you knew got from the MTN momo Hack?

Update: here's an official statement made by MTN

Update: the money my friend sent to me has been reversed. Same as the others.

And the money which has been withdrawn will show minus from your dashboard.

So, they'll still pay back the money.

I pity the dudes in BIDA, who used the money to purchase frivolous materials like iPhone 13 and cars cheesy

The programmers behind this are definitely gonna pay. btw if they had a competent QA officer all this could have been avoided.

Normal, but the designers of the system must either be drink when they did it or they didn't pay enough attention to security, me that's why I avoid financial applications that has a large scale with large transactions because only 40% of your focus will be on design the rest will be on security cause mehnnn

These is one of the reasons organizations hires penetration testers to evaluate or stress test their application/websites to avoid scenarios like this.
They might think it's waste of money but you tend to avoid this sort of situations
it's not all about doing the programming and sending it over the app store for downloads. You have to be sure the app is secure enough even malicious actors cant exploit your app in anyway.

MTN’s newly licensed Mobile Money Payment Service Bank Limited (MOMO PSB) has dragged 18 Nigerian banks to court to retrieve N22.3 billion mistakenly transferred to 8,000 accounts in the banks.

Court filing in suit No. FHC/L/CS/960/2022 instituted by the Mobile Money Bank against 18 Banks revealed that the error occurred via a computer glitch.

The amount is about $53.7m.

He averred that on or about the 24th day of May, 2022, it was noticed that funds had been erroneously transferred from its settlement account to various accounts maintained by the 18 banks.

Anthony in the affidavit further claimed that a total of about 700, 000 transactions were processed with credits made into about 8,000 various accounts in the listed 18 banks.

Upon becoming aware of the incident, he further asserted that MOMO PSB Ltd management responded by immediately shutting down the service to limit the impact and triggered engagement with the banks for the commencement of recovery activities from the accounts of the various beneficiaries in the various banks.

The erroneous transfers, he claimed, were due to the fact that MOMO PSB Ltd suffered a system glitch which led to the said debits.

The MTN’s MOMO Bank’s boss in the affidavit asserted that the 18 banks requested for an order of court mandating them to reverse the credits made into their customers account before they can do so, hence, the filing of the suit.
