Heavy rainstorms and floods, on Tuesday, hit several parts of Noida, in Uttar Pradesh state of India.

Many of the roads and streets were waterlogged, after the one-hour evening downpour, even as residents were seen wading, through the dirty puddle.

Traffic in many neighbourhoods snarled-up, as motorists, motorcyclists, tricyclists, popularly called auto rickshaw, and other road users, all struggled through the torrent.

Most of the narrow inner streets were worse, because of lack of proper drainage systems, with the affected sections littered with debris, cow dung and refuse.

Noida, acronym for ‘New Okhla Industrial Development Authority,” is a planned city, located in Gautam Buddha Nagar district of the state.

It was developed, as a satellite city of Delhi and a part of the National Capital Region (NCR) of India.

Despite the downpour, the temperature, was still from about 38° C.

Increasing incidences of torrential rain, flash floods and other environmental disasters, affecting India, Pakistan, Canada, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria and other parts of the world, are all consequences of climate change, according the United Nations(UNEP).

The 2021 report published by UN India, highlighted the need for more action to mitigate global warming.

Sadly without urgent solutions, “the world’s average surface temperature is projected to rise over the 21st century and is likely to surpass three degrees Celsius this century – with some areas of the world expected to warm even more,” it lamented.

It noted that ‘the poorest and most vulnerable people are being affected the most. Climate change also exacerbates disasters and combating it is absolutely vital to guaranteeing our survival and the wellbeing of future generations.”

The reports reads:
“India is the third highest emitter of carbon-dioxide and is responsible for 6.9% of global emissions. However, the emissions intensity of India’s GDP reduced by 12% between 2005 and 2010.”

‘ In October 2015, India made a commitment to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 20-25% from its 2005 levels by 2020 and by 33-35% by 2030. On 2 October 2016 India formally ratified the historic Paris Agreement. India has committed to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 20-25% by 2020.”

“The earth’s climate is changing, with severe consequences for our daily lives and the resilience of our countries. Climate change is disrupting national economies, People are experiencing changing weather patterns, rising sea levels, and extreme weather events. Greenhouse gas emissions from human activities driving this change continue to rise.”

“They are now at their highest levels in history. Globally averaged temperatures in 2017 were 0.90 degrees Celsius warmer than the 1951 to 1980 mean, according to NASA.”

Major targets include steps to strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries.

Others include integrating climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning and improving education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.
