Yes it is possible, but the president has to consult widely, the reason behind the organization of CONFAB summit years ago, I think under H.E GoodLuck Johnathan &with the help of NASS, i think it should be part of the re-structuring we all want, to see States &other important things function properly for better services &development. For Instance: Anioma State (Delta Igbo) should be created with capital at Asaba out of Delta State, add it to South-East geopolitical Zone to have a balance of six (6)states. Faras I'm concern, it is the River Niger that separate Onitsha, Anambra State from Asaba, the Delta State capital. Ogoja State (Northern Cross River State) Cross River State is very big with International Boundary. Imagine, it will take you 5-6hours of travelling time from Calabar(down-south) to Ogoja or Obudu bordering Benue(North-Central Nigeria) &Cameroon Republic. New Local Councils should be created to further drive down development to the hinterlands. Ogoja State (Northern Cross River State) for instance have a very vast arable landmass suitable for agricultural development just like Benue State, which was Nigeria's mainstay before the discovery of oil, food &cash crops can be grown ffor local consumption or export to generate IGR in addition to federal allocation which i know i won't be much for the new State, reasons to look inwards &develop the resources abound within the State for sustainable development. Note, they're the food basket of Akwa-Cross Region. Other states can see a need to split if the have something Reasonable to sustain themselves. 2 Likes |

Feministolash: The answer is, it is possible, but it is a long and convoluted process. Below is a reply given by a Senate commitee on the matter in response to inquiries about state creation (and also to debunk a rumor that 20 states were in the pipeline) For ease of reference, Section 8 of the Constitution provides: ‘An Act of the National Assembly for the purpose of creating a new state shall only be passed if – (a) a request, supported by at least two-thirds majority of members (representing the area demanding the creation of the new State) in each of the following, namely (i) the Senate and the House of Representatives, (ii) the House of Assembly in respect of the area, and (iii) the local government councils in respect of the area, is received by the National Assembly; SORCE So, it has to be an act of the national assembly, which has to be approved by a referendum at state level....not the simple 'creation by fiat' of the millitary era. 1 Like |
