It is not poverty that make one eat it. It very delicious, protein rich and clean free from contamination. If you are in China all these food items we count as poverty food were being sought for by the elites
Small snail (gbangbata & ipere) used to be poor man meat but now the rich are fretting to get it ,it is even out of the reach of the common people now.

My brother, it has nothing to do with poverty. I was cajoled to taste this delicacy on getting to the village sometime in the early 80s. As a Lagos boy, I couldn't imagine how somebody will be eating termites. Believe me if this thing is properly prepared you will nearly bite your fingers. The truth is that I enjoyed it.

I miss eating this flying termites, gone are those days in the late 90s, we are all hunters in the area (Trenches) when it come to this flying termites called Esunsun or Iba as called by we Yorubas, Igbos call it Aku, this termites is said to be very nutritious, so rich in protein.
My childhood experience is incomplete without talking about hunting of Esunsun, snails and fruits, so funny unforgettable experience.
This insect comes out at night following light, sometimes in the early morning when it's still dark.
Esunsun are actually termites that fly, very proteinous and nutritious. Known as Macrotermes bellicosus scientifically.
I won't say much about the peptides and all other biochemical and microbiological information about this insect.

There is this one called locust. My mum will cook and force me to drink the water. She said the water and the locust is highly medicinal cos they eat good leaves. Any leave they don't eat, humans shouldn't eat as the leave is poisonous.

She will fry the locust. Best eaten with abacha.
