How to write a good research grant proposal[size=8pt]

A research proposal should be submitted before you receive approval or funding to undertake the research.

A research proposal may be required for a master’s or PhD program or as a part of a grant application.

A research proposal is a document that details your well-thought-out plan of an intended research project before you commence the research.

Things necessary to include when writing a Research Proposal

Title and Research Question(s)
Background and Rationale
Methodology and ethical considerations
Study logistics

1.Title and Research Question(s)

These are usually the first things an assessor gets to read about your study and deserve close attention.

2.Background and Rationale

Provide the context of your research and include evidence-based rationale for the study.

3. Methodology and ethical considerations

Outline selected research methods and ethical considerations

4. Study logistics

Research timelines, cost of study, dissemination plans etc.
What has been done?

To ensure relevance and avoid duplication, it is important to review the literature to know what has been done in your field of interest.
What are the gaps?

When you review the literature, you need to note the gaps and have initial thoughts on how these gaps can be closed. (This gap you choose must be interesting for your mental health
How can these gaps be closed?

Conduct another review of literature now focusing on how similar or same topic has been researched previously. Will you need to do the same thing or tweak the methods? type of data collected or how they will be collected?
Framing the (working) research topic

Your research title should leave the reader feeling you are clear about the indication of your study and clear about your proposed approach. Note that the framing of your topic may change as your research progresses.
Writing good research questions and objectives
What are research questions?

These are the questions emanating from your topic, that your research project hopes to answer
What are research objectives?

They concisely describe the accomplishments a researcher sets out to attain in order to achieve the overall aim of the research.
Is my research question good enough?

Steps typically depend on your research approach

The how’s, steps, examples have been dealt with in the link in footnotes.
Are my research objectives good enough?

S – Specific

M – measurable

A- attainable

R- relevant

T- Time-based
background and rationale

Share brief context of the challenges in your chosen area, highlighting the need in the area.
Share a brief review of literature ensuring a cohesive build-up to your rationale
Provide evidence-based rationale for your study – if there are key debates for your study, this may be a good place to bring them up

Methodology and ethical considerations

An assessor or examiner will read this section hoping to find these answers:

What is your research type?
What is your research design?
What kind of data do you anticipate you will use?
What research tools and procedures will you use (e.g. experiments, focus groups, surveys etc) to collect and analyze your data?
Why have you chosen these methods to answer your questions? Are you aware of other methods?
How will you answer each of your research questions?
Are you clear about your study population? Did you identify how to reach them and have you assessed the ease of accessing them?
How much time will you need to collect and analyze your data?
Are there potential ethical issues for your research?
How will you manage these ethical issues?

Study logistics
Research budget

An overview of the presumed cost of your study.
Research timelines

Ensure timelines are feasible and make allowances for eventualities
Dissemination plans

Though these plans may change, but it is useful to demonstrate how you plan to share the information you have uncovered from the literature.
