The National Union of Road Transport Workers is an independent Nigerian trade union that serves the interests of transport workers in the road transport sector,[1] by calling for collective obtaining and pushing for social stability for all workers in the transport sector as defined in its constitution.

The union was founded in 1978, when the government of Nigeria merged the following unions:[2]

The union affiliated to the Nigeria Labour Congress. By 1988, it had 30,000 members, and by 2005, this had grown to 96,000.[3]

The union raises fund through several methods, but the largest of these is through support and willful contribution of union funds. The core functions of the union is to protect the rights of workers in the transport sector. Entry into the union is voluntary, however the dues collected are used to run functions in the union and support members. The youth department under the women league ensure youth programs to educate and sensitise members on good service delivery and customer relation.


The union came into existence in 1977 as one of the house unions, and in 1978 it was strengthened by Decree No. 22 (Davison 1977).

The activities of 'Agbero' (members of the NURTW) are meant to be confined to the motor parks. Don't stop a bus bang in the middle of the road to collect dues when I am on my way to work during rush hours! Don't convert three lanes out of a four-lane highway for the purposes of your extortion while condemning all of us (other road users) to use only one lane. These are the issues. When Marwa was MILAD in Lagos he never tolerated this madness. Back in the '90s, he tied up the late NURTW Lagos chairman - Saka Saula like a ram in Ipaja there and bundled him off to Alausa to receive sense.

That said, the term 'Agbero' within Lagos now has a much broader definition. It is a euphemism for riff-raffs who are engaged in purely rent seeking activities. Whether it is the ones collecting owo ticket from bus drivers or cart pushers and tomato sellers or those ones waiting for you after you have mounted a scaffolding to paint your house to pay them first before you can start or those who will demand money before you can pack out of a neighborhood (yes this happened to me!). They are also available for hire by politicians. That's how ridiculous and widespread this madness is in Lagos courtesy of that Bat.
