My german shepherd is 5 months and always biting my hands. I know she does it as play but she's always giving me wounds and my hands are full of marks now. Will she stop this act on her own or should I start flogging her to stop?

Hhmm.... I don't know why Africans always resort to flogging. Dogs in Nigeria aren't better behaved than dogs in many western countries, but these guys hardly hit thier pets. Unlike other pets like cats and birds, dogs are known to be very forgiving. But this does not mean flogging them cannot deteriorate your relationship with them. You can't get the best of the dog ownership experience if your dog fears your presence. There's a level of bonding you can never get to with a pet of you hit them. Suffice to say, flogging is a lazy man's way of training pets.

Sorry, I just wanted to register my disapproval. Now, let's get back to the issue. Your dog isn't aggressive, he just doesn't know your pain threshold (assuming it's a male since I don't like refering to pets with the impersonal pronoun). If you flog him, he would interpret it as you being mean. Why would you flog someone for playing with you? He might end up scared of playing with you. Why not adopt the correct-and-reward approach? This approach, also called the positive reinforcement, works like magic.

First, you need to let your dog know the word you use to express disapproval. For me, I use the word "NO". Anytime I say it, I make my voice loud and firm (and sometimes, stop giving him attention). The dog would normally stop whatever it's doing to process that. Then I'd put him in a situation where he would repeat the offense again and again, I say "NO" in the same manner. I repeat this process till he is reluctant to commit the offense, and then I praise him and give him a treat for being a good boy. The moment the dog understands your disapproval word, it makes subsequent training easier. When he bites you, say the word and if he stops immediately, praise him and reward him; otherwise, stop playing with him. He will gradually stop biting you over time.

Note: It's important to let your dog know your praise words top. A combination of body expressions and treats can easily achieve that.

There used to be a show on BBC Brit tagged (Dogs behaving very badly) Its very informative . Or better still you can Google it and watch like one episode.

One of the episodes showed a lady who's dog love biting and chewing on her hand and in the process injures her. The solution was simple.

Dogs are like babies,if you keep giving in to their demands they will feed on your simplicity.

First what d man asked her to do was to set boundaries. And that involves the action words like NO!!! STOP IT !!! BAD DOG!!! When ever the dogs starts biting you. You have to repeat those action words while you keep shoving d dog aside from you.

By the time you repeat it like 10 times d dog will stop bothering you. I swear it works. But you don't have to be soft while doing it, you av to be hard and at same time loving. They read moods just like kids. Once u ignore their feferity they will buckle up. His name is Graeme Hall.

Least I forget, always give your dog a treat when ever it obeys you, keep repeating it don't relent, I bet you ,you will see the the changes you long for.

He immediately stops and starts licking, then I thank him.
