My Vehicle Sound Change After My Mech. Tamper With This Part. Help by izaac23(m): 5:13pm On Jul 16, 2022
I drive Corolla 2003, My mechanic told me that my timing chain is weak when I went to service my engine.
But he said he can do something to adjust it from the back of my engine to be alright, so I allowed him.
He loosed this part (pics attached) from the back of my engine and took it to a welder, I don't know wat the welder cut or weld into it, he brought it back, sand paper it and fix it.

Since then, the sound of my engine changed and start grunting a bit louder when I start the engine, but normalize when the engine settles, but grunt on motion.

My vehicle engine is always quiet, but after wat he did, I can hear the sound of my engine from the inside when I drive it.

Pls I need help, wat is the consequence of wat he just did, and wat can I do about it. Gurus help me pls. Thanks.

What's the name of your car,
engine spec,
what is also the name of the part changed?.

Did you stay with him during the change or did he do the change in your absence.
I hope you catalyst hasn't been removed.

I was there all the way to the end, my catalyst has not been removed, let's rule out that

Imagine the abuse this car with a simple engine design suffers in the hands of Kazeems just to eliminate rattle at start up. angry

https://www.nairaland.com/7229864/engine-rattle-noise-upon-cold

GAZZUZZ:
you startup a modern day vehicle from cold start, it rattles for a few secs (kakakakakakakakakakaa) then noise goes away like nothing happened. No performance issues, no noise. But when ever vehicle stands still inactive for about 5-6hrs and you startup again, you have the startup rattle.

If you have this problem, it is almost certain you have a defective VTC actuator.

VTC stands for Variable Timing control, As engine rpm builds, the VTC actuator - controlled by the engine computer that monitors cam position, ignition timing, exhaust emission and throttle position - advances or retards the intake cam throughout a range , optimizing engine output and reducing emissions.

So in summary, the intake camshaft is not static, but variable.

When defective it rattles for a few secs until a buildup of oil pressure keeps it stable, so basically it's inability to hold oil makes it rattle for a few seconds.

Causes of this defect could arise from the use of wrong oil grades (20w50 people unna weldone) and Defect in production.

Now here's the interesting part of this topic.

Once in a while I used to receive vehicles with very quite engines but re.tarded or advanced timing error codes on the engine computer, after advanced diagnosis we would notice that the intake VTC cam was welded firmly in place angry it was very common in the corrolas with the 2zr engines, and the honda with the K24Z engines, the symptoms exhibited were a terrible loss of power and correlation codes on timing.

So now that you know, before you buy that Nigerian used car, if you notice any funny timing codes and a previously breached timing cover just know that VTC might be welded in 1 position.

You have worn out timing chain, timing chain guards, and most likely vtc actuator.

What the mechanic did was to extend the factory length of your tensioner (longer "d" so it can hit the sweet spot) so the chain will not rattle, unfortunately I don't know how long this will last.

Bite the bullet and do a proper job by opening the timing chain cover, examine the parts that are worn and replace them.

Good luck.

Give your car to an educated mechanic not a kazeem who was forced to drop out of school at primary 5 and was forced to become a mechanic

This was what he said, but before this, I never noticed any rattling in my engine, now if I ramp up the engine, I hear rattling on one side of the engine where he tampered with.

Pls if I remove the part in the picture he welded and fixed back, buy another one and fix, will it stop??

Secondly how old do we think that part will cost me?

Welcome to NL.
Some questions for you:
1. How many miles on the odometer?
This would help us determine the age of your engine internal components, and hence the noise (if perhaps there was any before you took the vehicle to the mechanic).

2. Was there any engine noise before you went for an oil change?

What was that thing he welded from your picture?
What he welded is called a timing chain, autotensioner.
It is spring loaded intern, and operated using engine oil pressure.

Consequences of what he has done?
They are extremely grave here dude; if not quickly corrected, would lead to engine failure (knock).

This would happen in your case, since the plunging action of the auto tensioner, has been permanently arc welded. This increases more than enough stress on the valve train components, leading to engine failure.

You want proof of the above paragraph?
Here we go!

** Drain that oil, and you'd see aluminum filings there, which would definitely clog the oil pump filter, etc.

** Valvetrain components would be already worn out before now.

The fix?!
** Drain that oil, if you've not driven the car for a while now(loads on engine, etc)
This would help reduce or eliminate all the aluminum fillings that might have been lodged in the engine. Do this one or two times, with a new oil filter, and engine oil refilled.

** Replace that timing chain, auto tensioner (what he arc welded).

** Replace the VVTi(camshaugears), if that hasn't failed yet. Be absolutely sure that, the noise you may have had, before you took the vehicle to him, was not a cold start VVTi problem.

Hope this helps you fix that engine.
Hope this helps you out there.

The picture below shows what a valvetrain actually meant.
Although, this is for a 2ZR engine Corolla 2008, as exposed.

That's how yesterday, I took my car to a highly recommended car radio "expert" to help me install a subwoofer...

While doing that, he had to take apart a part of the car dashboard panel housing the radio and AC buttons...Dude did a nice and neat job with the subwoofer installation..that worked perfectly

Only problem was that I discovered at night that my car's ac button night lights were no longer working sad ..Somehow guy managed to install subwoofer and uninstalled my ac button illumination lights undecided

Somehow, Naija mechanics always manage to install a new problem after solving an old one ...Maybe it's part of the ethics of their profession.."Never forget to install a new problem after solving an old one"

The odometer reading is about 197,000+ miles

I went to the mechanic for oil change and also to change the small shock attached to the roller the fan belt passes thru cuz it was weak and made noise when I engage the A/C and at low speed, which he did perfectly and the noise stoped

But while doing this, he said that he noticed that my timing chain is weak (which offcouse I did not notice any sign of that) and that he will do something to adjust it to work perfect, hence the uprooting and wedding of the inner part above (pics)

I use Mobil 1 5w30, ur sugestion of oil change twice will cost me alot, is there no other way?

Can that timing chain outotensioner be easily seen, and how much do you estimate it will cost cuz I want to replace it now I have heard the consequence of it asap.

Thanks for your prompt responds.

@izaac23.
1. You're not to drain and refill with a synthetic as the case maybe now. Use conventional mineral oil, just for the drains, then you could revert back to your synthetic oil.

2. Auto tensioner is easily seen, and that's the pictures you posted here.

3. How much would it cost? Well, depends on the technician you're working with, and whether if you're buying new, or used.

Good evening Oga TRYGO and my auto gurus,
I finally went back to the mech, I told him to quickly undo wat he did to the adjuster, he tried convincing me otherwise but I was insistent. So he loosed the part out.

Wat he did here was that he welded a round knot to the tip of the adjuster to increase the length of the adjuster, he did not weld the adjuster to remain permanently to one place cuz when he removed the clip on the adjuster, it still sprung out.

He took it back and removed the knot he welded to the adjuster and the adjuster was back to it normal length, then he tight it back to it's place but the sound I heard remained constant. Wat I don't understand this minute was if the sound was there already and I did not notice it till he touched the adjuster that I search for any different in sound cuz if I don't tell you where and wat to concentrate your listening when I start the engine, u will not hear it. It's a very small rattling sound.

I took it to another mech who I know have years of experience and has worked in an auto company before,
He came up with a different conclusion o, he said that is not the chain, that the chain can't be weakened, he said it's the camshaft inside the engine that is making the sound. He added that the camp is not firmly attached and it's has clearing under that makes it move, hence the noise.
Which among this cud be the case?
I no know wetin to bliv again my people
