In 2020 I lost my job (I should have said A job, not MY job, because saying my job makes me feel ‘entitled’, but you get the gist).

Two weeks after that job loss, I started actively engaging on social media and sharing my job loss journey.

Then I started receiving messages like “You are courageous” from other Africans who experienced same ordeal, because I was ‘confident’ to tell the world I was laid off and share the highs and lows of job searching.

I however saw professionals from other climes in Europe, America, Asia coming out here on LinkedIn saying they lost their jobs and asking for help and support.

But here in Africa we were quiet and hiding. ☹️

Layoffs are happening again and I see same trend happening again in Africa.

If you lost your job and you are in Africa, it’s okay to make a post about it and ask for help.

I am infact challenging you to make a post and or series of posts about your job loss journey.

Why? Just like when it happened to me and I leveraged social media to share about my journey, the following can happen for you:

You would let your network know about what happened and you never know the kind of opportunities you are opening yourself up to
You would be able to get ideas from people on companies recruiting, as people want to really help.
You can get on the spot side gigs and consulting opportunities, to keep you sane and busy while you job search for the kind of jobs you are indeed deserving of
Lastly this career experience may be the start of building a formidable personal brand, that is more than its worth in gold.

You're right! Even on Twitter, people jump out to announce that they need support after getting laid off...

But in Nigeria, we shy away from it -- because we don't want to be shamed. Unemployed people are tagged with shame, that's why many Nigerians remain in toxic workplaces and stay underemployed just because they want to go out there and be associated with unemployment again.

No be small!

1. Pray

2. Pray harder

3. Sow a seed to your Pastor

4. Keep sowing bigger seeds.

And you'll get another job soonest.

This I have seen.

This is what I don't pray for except you leave bcox of the working condition or u wana start your own business...

It is a very bad situation.....

I pray for every nairalander working in one place or the other, nobody will make you loose where you get your daily bread in Jesus name...

Very important:
If this is how APC will continue to manage Nigeria, then I hope they don't win next year election.

ASUU, insecurity and so much calamities under first 8 years of a new party is so appalling

Re: 4 Things Do When You Are Laid Off by wonder233: 1:39pm On Jul 19, 2022
I've been there twice, it isn't a nice place to be. One tip I can advise is: Don't take contract staff employments, it only sets you up for such heartaches, plus you spend virtually the entire time feeling inferior to others in the same organisation. It also gives you a false sense of belonging while making mockery of you, for instance, people may know the company as a high paying company, while you bear their name, but you don't look the part cos you're poorly paid. And the period you're there, you unconsciously stop or slow down in chasing for real full time roles...
So please avoid contract employments, especially if you're a young person

Every single Nigerian doesn't have that option.

In any case, entrepreneurship can never succeed with everyone! Not everyone can create an enterprise!

While job hunting, do learn some digital skills by the side(Most especially high income skills). That way your services can fit into any workplace. More so, it makes you an indispensable team member because the value you’ll be bringing to the table is almost inevitable to the growth and operations of the firm.

Besides that, in your spare time, you can offer those skills in form of service to individuals, corporate bodies and perhaps be a freelancer with such skills.

Being laid off or unemployed isn’t the end of the road, in fact, its the best time to acquire skills that will help leverage one’s career.
I know some people will be like “No Money” “they’ve come again, bla bla bla”.

No! This is your life, you dictates what and how it should go. They’re many free resources on YouTube and google you can start with. Daily studying and learning everyday, even if its one hour or two, dedicate that time to learn and acquaint yourself with this 21st century digital skills. Understand the market demand and position yourself to benefit from the exchange of knowledge and resources. After learning this skills, network and go back to the labor market and see how employers and business owners will be running after you to take their money and work with them.

Again, while job hunting, please do learn a skill by the side.
For the sake of jobseekers and Corp members or perhaps undergraduates please I beg you learn this skills and see how your life will change before the year ends

High demand skills you should learn are;

Digital Marketing
Copy writing and content writing skills
Email Marketing
Facebook and Instagram ads
Closing skills and negotiation skills
Web design/development (front end)
Data analysis
Graphic designs
UI/UX designs
Cyber security
Software development

If you learn these skills, especially the first 5 or 6, you can work for any company in the world and apply it in any business model be it

Consultancy
Agency business
Real estate
Affiliate Marketing
E-commerce
SME’s business or even for your small trading business, importation and whatever you sell. Don’t play with skills fam, especially high income skills. You can do it, but learning from an institute or mentorship will speed up your progress like a rocket in no time.

But if you don’t have money, start with what you have; free night plan and YouTube resources.

While you job hunt, learn a skill. That way you ease your tension and desperation while you focus on improving yourself.
Have a good day!
