Eight Facts About AK-47

1. In the history of firearms, no gun is more popular than the AK-47. There are over 200 million AKs circulating the world. No weapon has killed more people than the AKs.

2. When a typical AK-47 fires, the speed of the bullets is twice faster than the speed of sound. The bullets travel at over 600 meters per second.

3. "AK" means Avtomat (Russian word for "automatic"wink Kalashnikov. It's eponymously derived from the name of the Soviet era army general who carried the design into completion and approval, Mikhail Kalashnikov. The 47 stands for 1947— the year AK-47 was approved for use as a reliable military weapon.

4. While the weapon is sold in millions around the world, Mikhail Kalashnikov himself is poor. He doesn't make any money from the sales or patent.

5. Mikhail Kalishnikov, greatly regretted inventing the weapon. He once said: "I would prefer to have invented a machine that people could use and that would help farmers with their work, for example a lawnmower."

6. AK-47 is the favorite weapon of terrorists. For example, Boko Haram and other jihadist terror groups have AK-47 on printed on their flags.
