The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) was founded on Friday 01 April 1977 as a fully government-owned corporation. Since then, it has made investments and also founded various subsidiaries in different parts of the world.

The most recent annual report of the NNPC lists 23 of its subsidiaries, and 20 of them are 100% owned by the Corporation.

On Friday 01 July 2022, the NNPC legally became NNPC Ltd, a profit-oriented oil corporation. On Tuesday 19 July 2022, President Muhammdu Buhari officially inaugurated the new NNPC, officially bringing to an end 44 years as a government entity and the beginning of its operations as a private company.
