In the olden days, there were no condoms and other contraceptives. Abortion was a taboo and almost unheard. Yet, our grandparents were slaying and having fun skin to skin. They were also able to decide when to get pregnant using a natural and free method with zero side effect.

You probably may have heard about the safe and unsafe method of family planning but do not fully understand it. Here is a simple and brief step to step guide to it.

STEP 1
Study your menstrual cycle
Understanding your menstrual cycle is the first step to knowing your safe and unsafe period.
Each cycle begins from the first day you started bleeding to the first day of the next bleeding. The length differs with individuals.
The average range is normally from 15 days to 32 days.

For example, if you started bleeding on 5th July, that day is your Day 1. Mark it. When you stop bleeding (maybe after four days), wait till the next time you will start bleeding again. Count from 5th July to that day to know the length of your cycle. If that day is 3rd August, it means the length of your menstrual cycle is 30 days because from 5th July to 3rd August is 30 days. Repeat this for six months to be sure of your cycle length.

STEP 2
Find out your ovulation day
Once you know the length of your cycle, the next step is to find out your ovulation day. This is the day your ovary will release a mature egg into the fallopian tube where it can be fertilized by a sperm cell.

Ovulation day is usually the middle of your menstrual cycle. If you have a 30 day cycle, your ovulation day is around day 15.

STEP 3
Know your safe and unsafe period

Safe period are the days you can engage in unprotected sex without getting pregnant.

Unsafe period are the days you are most likely to get pregnant after unprotected sex.

You should avoid sex on your ovulation day and the days close to it if you are not ready for pregnancy. These are your unsafe days.
For example, someone with a 30 days cycle should avoid sex from day 12 to day 18.
Other days are safe.

thanks for the info, I know a lady who had her period on the 1st of November and it lasted for 5 days, then met with a man on the 24th and 25th but 12 days later she had a positive test strip. is that possible?
secondly, if your cycle length varies from 28-33 days withing 7 months can this "safe days" thing still work? (the 28 days was just once during the 7 month period)
