Musing About The Son Of Noah by Acehart: 5:05pm On Jul 29, 2022
Ham had sex with his mother (Noah’s wife). Leviticus 18 provides clarity to the usage of the term unclothedness in the manner used in Genesis 9:22.

Furthermore, there is additional text which supports this theory of Ham commission of incest and that is Noah doesn’t curse Ham, but cursed Ham’s son (Noah’s grandson) Canaan. The reason Noah curses Canaan is because he is the result of the illicit act (incest).

It is more likely what happened. This is for a reason Bible repeats on a few occasions that Ham was the father of Canaan. Shem and Japheth also had children, but it was not said to them as to Ham.

Na who send make the father get drunk?
Why did he get naked in the first place?
Why curse the offspring instead of the sinner himself?
Why didn't Lot curse his offspring too or that is because Jesus will be involved?
Why wasn't Perez cursed too since he was the result of incest of father and daughter in law or is it because they are the great granddads of Jesus?
Both Ellicott's and Pulpit commentary didn't retranslate that verse as you did.

There is no justice, fairness and equity in that verse! That verse just spoiled everything Noah did earlier in the Bible!

As usual, you resort to words that aren’t yours, because you aren’t smart or you had a messed up education and you didn’t reach your full potential.

1. Ham had sex with his mother (Noah’s wife). Leviticus 18 provides clarity to the usage of the term unclothedness in the manner used in Genesis 9:22.

1. Your claim that Ham slept with his mother does not make sense at all when one closely exams the information provided in the passage as below. undecided
18 Noah’s sons came out of the boat with him. Their names were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.)
19 These three men were Noah’s sons. And all the people on earth came from these three sons.
20 Noah became a farmer and planted a vineyard.
21 One day Noah made some wine. He got drunk, went into his tent, and took off all his clothes.
22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw that his father was naked and told his brothers who were outside the tent.
23 Shem and Japheth took a robe, put it across their shoulders, and walked backward into the tent. Then they covered their father without looking at him.
24 Later, Noah woke up. (He was sleeping because of the wine.) When he learned what his youngest son Ham had done to him,
25 he said, “May there be a curse on Canaan! May he be a slave to his brothers.”
26 Noah also said, “May the Lord, the God of Shem, be praised! May Canaan be Shem’s slave.
27 May God give more land to Japheth. May God live in Shem’s tents, and may Canaan be their slave.”
28 After the flood Noah lived 350 years.
29 He lived a total of 950 years; then he died. - Genesis 9 vs 18 - 29
2. For one, Ham was already indicated as the father of Canaan at the time the incident took place, so how could he, Canaan, have been the product of this supposed affair his father, Ham, had with his grandmother the day before he was cursed? undecided

3. The actions of Shem and Japheth, putting a robe across the shoulders of their father, Noah, and walking backwards into the tent, only make sense if Noah was indeed naked, and not if instead, Noah's wife was having an affair with her son. undecided

Noah resorting to putting a curse on Canaan for the actions of his father, Ham, was just foolish, in my opinion. undecided

As for that written in Leviticus 18, I don't see a connection to any of that written of the Noah case at all. undecided
6 “You must never have sexual relations with[a] your close relatives. I am the Lord.
7 “You must never have sexual relations with your father or mother. She is your mother, so you must not have sexual relations with her.
8 You must not have sexual relations with your father’s wife, even if she is not your mother, because that is like having sexual relations with your father.
9 “You must not have sexual relations with your sister. It doesn’t matter if she is the daughter of your father or your mother. And it doesn’t matter if your sister was born in your house[c] or at some other place.
10 “You must not have sexual relations with your granddaughter. It doesn’t matter whether she is the daughter of your son or the daughter of your daughter—they are all a part of you!
11 “If your father and his wife[d] have a daughter, she is your sister. You must not have sexual relations with her.
12 “You must not have sexual relations with your father’s sister. She is your father’s close relative.
13 You must not have sexual relations with your mother’s sister. She is your mother’s close relative.
14 You must not have sexual relations with the wife of your father’s brother. You must not go near your uncle’s wife for sexual relations. She is your aunt.
15 “You must not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law. She is your son’s wife, so you must not have sexual relations with her.
16 “You must not have sexual relations with your brother’s wife. That would be like having sexual relations with your brother.[e] - Leviticus 18 vs 6 -16

Thanks for your response. I like your observations.

If you check in the gospels, you would notice that Judas was introduced as the traitor long before the account of his betrayal was scripted. Could the mention of Canaan be a buildup of a time to come, to be scripted, the time between the days of Abraham and the time of Joshua?

I’d like us to look at this text below:

Genesis 49:3-27
Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, the first sign of my strength, excelling in honor, excelling in power. Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel, for you went up onto your father’s bed, onto my couch and defiled it.

The time between Reuben’s dishonor and his father’s curse was about 47 years. It would have been gut wrenching for Reuben to bear the silent treatment from his father for this long- “Spiteful words can hurt your feelings but silence can break your heart”.

I would have agreed with you on this text:

Genesis 9:23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the unclothedness of their father; and their faces were turned away, so that they did not see their father's unclothedness.

But Leviticus 18:8 says, “The unclothedness of thy father's wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father's unclothedness.” This euphemism used in Genesis c.9 is the most explicit translation of what transpired between Ham and his father. It is neither sodomy as some people have imagined or the unclothing of his father (literally) as you propose.

Where wine and sleep have been used in other portions of the scriptures, love was involved. I deduce Noah knew of his son’s act after he made love with his wife- perhaps she was arrested by her conscience, and so she confessed.

The account of Ham’s dishonor doesn’t tell us how long it took Noah to know what happened nor how long it took before He cursed his grandson. Notice that the chapter started with God blessing his sons, and who God blesses, no man can curse. The Book of Genesis doesn’t reveal many things yet it is one of the greatest books in the Bible. That’s why this thread is called “Musing about Noah’s son”. Canaan (meaning humiliated) was the product of that affair, maybe not. Christ is the seed of the woman and not Canaan. Therefore, Canaan can go to blazes.

Genesis 9:1
'And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them,
Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
'

I am shocked myself that I am agreeing with all the points Kobojunkie laid down, as you can see its almost exactly what we briefly and scantly discussed in camera

Far from being the truth you alleging that the Book of Genesis doesn’t reveal many things. Well, it would shock you to know that the Book of Genesis reveals, quite a lot, thats if you know where to look, thats if you know, not only how, just to look, but on top, know how to look and see

The underlining word and common denominator in Genesis 9:24 and Genesis 3:17 is one word. Thats just one dot piece of the jigsaw. Look for the scattered about here and there other piece dots, join them together, to get the picture and sense of what really happened to Noah and just in Eden as well

Looking at Genesis 9:1 up there, what a reversal of fortune for Ham that is though.

Personal text: Jesus is not a theologian. He is God who told stories.
