I've been following the situation in Malawi for a short while now and even contemplating making a discussion topic about what direction things will head. Well it looks like that very question has been answered, several non-governmental agencies are now pushing the International Criminal Court to prosecute Bingu wa Mutharika, the president of Malawi. I'm quite shocked that everything hit the fan so fast, it seemed like just a few days ago that the legitimacy of Mutharika's presidency was being called into question, and now this. It all happened so fast, what do you think of the situation developing there?

Good point, I have not read up on the situation but it looks like a classic western ambush where they use the media to demonise, use money to support armed and political opposition then next thing we know there a coup and he flees into exile. the man simply wants to make his country self-reliant and reduce its dependency on aid donors; especially in the farming sector - is that a crime? or is there more to the story?

It is sad that the rank of the African leaders who commanded some respect keeps dwindling with the recent resolve of the likes of Bingu wa Mutharika of Malawi and Abdullahi Wade of Senegal to dance naked in the marketplace.

Mr Mutharika sent the signal not too long ago when he told the followers of his party to physically attack anyone as much as say anything uncomplimentary of the president. And when a diplomat criticised him he expelled the diplomat, cutting off a significant amount of aid to Malawi. With the recent slaughter of demonstrators it might not be long before Malawi degenerates into the days of His Excellency the Life President of Malawi Dr. H. Kamuzu Banda.

I hope those calling for an ICC trial get their way so that justice can be served to those killed. Or, better still, I hope he gets tried by the courts of Malawi some day.
