For months I had been looking for a Japanese Car to buy with a tight budget but the prevailing economic conditions hamper my resolve making it a mirage or should I say nearly impossible. When it seem impossible because of the high cost of Japanese vehicles in the market I tilted my search to the European car makers preferably Germans engineered. So I took my search to jiji, Facebook, nairaland and some other social media platforms in the bid to struck a better deal . Sent messages to some advertisers, called many but was conscious of the scammers abound.

Few weeks back, I felt I was lucky with a near tokumbo standard of Mercedes Benz E320 at a good price in Abuja. I called the guy and we kept on talking for days, he made a video of the vehicle, showed me documents, infact made several videos on my insistence and I even sneak into his colleague Facebook page courtesy of truecaller for further proof and investigation and I was convince of the availability of the vehicle because this same colleague of his was riding in the car with his wife and the several advert soliciting for purchase of this same car in his Facebook timeline.

Having cross all the t's with dotting the I's, I was set to travel to Abuja the location of the seller to make purchase. Seller was expecting me and we chatted some more. I even called to plead with him to at least be straight with me on the availability of the vehicle and save me the stress. He gave me an irrevocable assurance that my soon to be vehicle is waiting for me and that began the journey to Abuja by road.

Tuesday last week I headed to the bus terminal to book ticket for the night journey to Abuja on getting to the park my partner called that I should shelve the idea of traveling in the night and embark in the morning due to insecurity and the condition of the roads. With that I booked an early morning car and was instructed to be at the terminal by 5 am for the first sienna. Needless to say I missed it as the operator of the traveling company already sold my spot to another. I was prevailed to be in the second Car. Anyway we proceeded the journey past 8 am towards Abuja.

The journey was smooth save say Aba in Abia State. Our driver made a detour into Etche, then owerrenta in Abia state and then join the enugu expressway just to cut off the bad section of Aba road. Of a truth that bypass took us almost 2 hours 30 minutes something that could've been achieved in 1 hour and a little more if the road was good from the ABA section.. We journeyed into Enugu, Udenu, Nsukka, Igboeze, Udi and into Kogi . The road were good but for a 20 minutes drive into Kogi from the Enugu section that was uneven, unpaved, rough and infact hamper drivable conditions. The kogi section of the road was good and drivable. We cruise toward ajaokuta, then lokoja and eventually entered Abuja. Even though my Car seller may reason I may be on the road I kept my journey discreet and refused communication. This way I am able to keep self save in case I am dealing with criminals. Keeping my journey discreet is not letting them know my movement, my preferred transport company, my hotel accommodation once I am in Abuja and other itinerary. All I need was their address to the car station but I was also of the mindset that if I wasn't comfortable of the location of the car I'll prevail on them to bring it to a public place for inspection and transaction.

I arrived Abuja late around 11pm and almost all the hotels around utako that night were fully booked. Hotels here don't come cheap as a studio chalet cost almost 10k. Being stranded I consider passing the night in a hotel lounge but was somehow lucky when a lady of the night offered me her room for half the cost around 2pm and I gladly paid her because I needed the sleep after a long journey. Nature don't compromise. It seem lady has unfinished business in the night so she vacated the room for me even though she lives there kinda of.

Following day I woke up around 10 am , took my bath, book a bolt and off I head into Garki to meet my supposed seller and his accomplice....

I arrived at the Automatic car wash in Garki 2 to meet with the sellers ( obviously now they're 2) . One of them who claim to be an indigene of Enugu state asked his colleague to do a live video of the car for me 3 days ago when he supposedly stated he was attending to his vehicle repair in Apo and it was this same guy flogging this same car he uploaded pictures on his Facebook timeline. So technically that's make them partner.

When I went into the car mart, I did a surveillance of the place scanning the entire market for the said car the allegedly said is sitting on the lot. Having satisfy my curiosity couple with the high price on the ones I saw, I became perplexed and dumbfounded wondering how this guys could sell such a near tokumbo car at a ridiculous price in contrast to the over bloated figures I am getting for even abused ones. Hmmmm....I became more cautious and ready to confront them with my call.

I rang the enugu guy first, oblivious of my present he inquired if I can still make it, I replied in the affirmative and refused to disclose my location, then I asked him if he was around the car market and he said yes. I then told him that I am in the market right away and I have come to inspect the car. Immediately guy man change narrative and told me car was sold yesterday because an online buyer made a deposit of 500k and the car was delivered to his relative at a certain Barrack awaiting complete payment. He then promise to help me source for other cars within my budget insisting I should have made a deposit. Imagine this nincompoop taking me for a ride. I didn't know if I was to cry or curse his life over the phone but somehow I maintain my temperance. He insisted we meet as he was on his way to meet with me but I declined and told him I am no longer interested in any car....this way it's my intuition to prevent scam or some sort of crime. If a man will make me lose 30k in logistics without considering my safety in this security situation of the country he could be mischievous and dangerous I reasoned.

Feeling downcast and demoralized, an hausa man in his late forties approached me trying to help me comb the market for a car but all available was a distance far off my budget. He made some calls and yet nothing happened.

After the disappointing results I decided to return back to port Harcourt and on my way out a guy drove in with his Mercedes Benz E320 and said he'll like to sell. Pronto I did a facial scan, ask questions about the car and its workability, saw the many abuses, deteriorating condition of the car and ask for a little spin. We drove the car for a while, the movement was really orgasmic....can't really remember the last time my matrimonial partner put me in such ecstasy and the shift was excellent. We drove back to the garage and here I need to consult a professional to help with proper diagnosis...

Time to consult a professional for further inspection I called a nairalander resident in Abuja to assist on inspection the following day, the guy sounding sleepy told me his inspection fee is 80k. Shior! Even after introducing myself as a nairalander but man insisted on his price. I was thinking 30k could've gotten me a good deal but then again I decided to consult nairaland thread itself. Yes...nairaland. There's a thread Gazzuzz dealt extensively on purchasing a used Nigerian vehicle. I quickly read up and arm with the knowledge I proceed to do the inspection myself moreover Mercedes Benz self diagnose.

After thorough investigation, I notice the following need attention; Airconditioner, one of the leg is shaking, broken interior parts, back fender, discharging battery due to to either failed alternator or battery, turn seats, bad tires, unregistered car, car due for service, lack of tracker, paint need new wear, and some non functional electronics system. This young man really abused this car, of a truth the car was way above his income level and suffered the consequence.

Putting all of this fixes into consideration, I decided to negotiate 600k off price for possible repairs and we stuck a deal. I was willing to ride or die.

We did the paper work and I paid. Car handed to me and I am here now to document repairs. This car has been barely used to be precise about 9 months but the wear and tear or rather abuse could equate a car that has been driven for 8 years. Tiny feet in an oversized shoe.

Hello, the price you mentioned online is TOTALLY FALSIFIED. your partner called my line at about 10:35pm when I was asleep, and I mentioned “₦20,000” which was what I charge for pre-inspection and with my organization letter headed signed copy mailed to you. The man who called me mummured some incoherent things and rudely dropped the call when he heard my fee

N80k for inspection? shocked wow! well, let me try to justify it ;

4 wheel well suspension components + tire = N10k each totaling N40k

Engine = N10k

Gearbox = N10k

AC system = N10k

Call credit + Transportation + beer (for job well done) = N10k

Erm … assuming that particular vehicle failed inspection nko . . . What next? undecided

God bless the Japanese grin

Op good luck on your project, I’ll be following keenly
