Abike Dabiri: Outcome of investigation into Itunu Babalola’s death will shock Nigerians


Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), says the outcome of investigation into the death of Itunu Babalola, the Nigerian lady who was ‘wrongfully jailed’ in Cote D’Ivoire, will shock many.

Dabiri-Erewa disclosed this while responding to questions at a media briefing at the state house in Abuja on Thursday.

Speaking on efforts made by the commission to get justice for the deceased, Dabiri-Erewa said a Nigerian who claimed to be investigating the circumstances surrounding Babalola’s death visited her before her demise.

The NIDCOM chairperson said Babalola might have been implicated by those who she regards as friends.

Dabiri-Erewa also lamented that the lack of CCTV footage has made it difficult to ‘really’ identify the suspect whom she described as ‘dark, male who had a relationship with the girl’.

“The case is in court and I would not want to pre-empt what is in court but there are some sad things about that,” she said.

“Somebody visited her before she died, I’m saying this for the first time and that person is a Nigerian.

“If there was CCTV, they would tell us who that Nigerian is, and it’s one person who has been going about saying that he’s doing some investigations. It’s deeper than that.

“When that comes out, you may be shocked, and again, because she’s late and the father is still mourning, it’s difficult but somebody, a Nigerian who claims to be investigating had a relationship with that girl and visited that girl and something happened to her.

“If it was a developed country, there would be CCTV and they would point that guy out. So, they’re still looking at it.

“I don’t think the police in Cote D’Ivoire did anything, sometimes we’re our biggest enemies. It’s deep, loaded but something deeper happened to that girl that goes right back to who she called her friend. Who were her friends? Who implicated her? Who went to visit her? Some male… dark…that claims he’s investigating.”

What is the meaning of this?
Madam Abike should respect the dead and her family and stop throwing about wild insinuations and accusations without any concrete evidence to back it up
Is she saying she was murdered by the visitor? If so, can she give cogent evidence to back it up?
Moreover, if she was in prison and a visitor had access to her to kill her, I believe the prison authorities should be able to provide the name of the person and explain how he was able to get whatever harmful substance he used on her into the prison
But more importantly, she is diverting from the koko of the matter, which is why she was wrongly jailed and the Nigerian authorities did not make any efforts to get her justice but instead danced around the matter till the lady died
All this audio-coroner investigation wey she dey do no buy bread abeg!! angry angry

The life of an average Nigerian is nothing to this evil govt. So there is nothing shocking about a grossly irresponsible govt back home who not only treat her citizens with disdain, but also killed and allowed them to be killed by other nations.

I never knew that a time will come when Nigeria will be doing this poorly..I remember when I was growing up in mid eighties ,we had a Ghana, south Africa and Cameroonian citizens living in the estate we used to live ,then whenever they see u ,you will see that they wish they were Nigerian citizens, one Ghana citizen mistakenly said in my presence ..Nigeria pikin is from God but today we are a laughing stock of the whole world..but my problem is with the idiots who want the old crooks to continue to rule us in 2023 ..but I thank God that I won't be the only one feeling the heat ..we are in it together whether good or bad...

I do not understand this upfront insinuation. Since matter is at court, it's best to allow the court rule on the matter. From Abike's angle, a mystery visitor who probably implicated her, visited and she died mysteriously after. Only in Africa. Was there no autopsy? Was there no prison records of visitors? Without CCTV the wardens would also allow random people come and go? There is something Abike is not telling us!!

In a nutshell, maybe the dark male is a Nigerian boyfriend or lover that killed her. Maybe by attempted rape or rape or disagreement? Nigerians are endangered species everywhere. Nigerians Gabe themselves bad name in Nigeria and oversea. So a times when crimes like this happen, it's dicey to say. We need to be seen as angels so that people ll fight for us.
