Volcanologists say the world must prepare for a major eruption. A new study has shown that the probability of a megavolcano erupting this century is one in six, and it could have dire consequences for all of humanity.

"This is not the plot of a Hollywood disaster movie, but a scenario based on previous eruptions that has a one-in-six chance of happening this century, according to an article published in the latest issue of the respected scientific journal Science.

The grim prediction comes from Dr. Mike Cassidy, a volcanologist at the University of Birmingham, and Dr. Lara Mani of Cambridge University's Center for Existential Risk Studies, and is based on sulfur deposits in ancient ice deposits in Antarctica and Greenland. They show how often major eruptions have occurred in the past and, therefore, how likely they are in the future, and challenge what they call the "broad misconception" that the risk of a major eruption is low.

Hilariously, these odds, equivalent to a roll of the dice, amount to seven points on the Volcanic Explosive Index (VEI), a score equivalent to the Richter scale for earthquakes and ranging from one to eight points.

By comparison, the eruption of Vesuvius, which killed about 16,000 people in Pompeii and other Italian cities in 79 AD, scored five on the VEI scale."
