onuman: ^^^ Ok. But they need to move past that. Each new administration is an opportunity for the south to advance its political interests through its lawmakers and governors. There is no shortage of issues requiring a common position. What is the south's track record here? Over the years there have been numerous other opportunities to negotiate a truly federal system even if progress arising from such opportunities is incremental. The constitutional conferences (as imperfect as they were) come to mind. Again, what is the south's track record here? onuman: ^^ I'm not sure about a 'proliferation' of states in northern nigeria...There are 19 states from northern nigeria and 17 from southern nigeria. That's a 2 state advantage - hardly an overwhelmingly large number - but an advantage nonetheless, I'll concede. Let's put that 2 state advantage to the test: I am curious if there has ever been a hot button issue over the past 30 years on which the south (through its governors) has voted as a bloc? The north has done so several times but has the south? But lets even put the above aside. Membership of a political party is voluntary and southern nigerian politicians do have agency! If a party isn't serving their interests they can vote with their feet. Let me emphasize again: Even if ALL politicians of northern nigerian origin formed 1 political party and refused to join any other party, they would fail to capture the presidency without support from the south. It really is that simple - the rules require a clear majority of votes in at least 24 states. Even if every single human from northern nigeria's 19 states voted for a northern candidate, it would be a futile quest without support from at least 5 states in southern nigeria. Let me reiterate: Southern Nigeria has agency! onuman: ^^^ Voters (from both the south and the north) also have agency. If they devalue their voting rights and reduce said rights to a near worthless validation of so-called anointed presidential candidates, then its the voters fault. I find it a bit strange though that you have somehow created an association between states/federating constituencies and voluntary association by politicians to form a party. What is the relationship? Political parties in Nigeria are not formed on this basis. Also note that Northerners (or those from any other region) have the freedom to form parties in which they are the majority - and to also choose a presidential candidate. There's no law against that. It may not be 'inclusive' but it isn't unlawful. It is up to voters to accept or reject them and their candidate! onuman: ^^^ We are now getting to the point I have been trying to make. Southern politicians are not helpless. They may lack ethics, integrity, focus and vision but they are most certainly not helpless. |

gadogado: Three regions - north, east and west - formed Nigeria in 1960. Why would northern military dictators create 19 states in one region - north, but created only 17 states in two regions - east and west? If you don't see that as fraud, what else can you see as fraud? If you don't see that proliferation of excess number of states in the north tilted the balance of political power and shared proceeds from resources in the south to the northern region, what else can you see as fraud? There ought to have been equal number of states for the 3 regions that formed independent Nigeria in 1960. New states/federating units are not created by consideration for land mass or population figures as yardstick, in a country formed originally by diverse regions. |
