Nigerian Union of Pensioners, NUP, Anambra State chapter yesterday honoured the former Governor of Anambra State and the Vice Presidential candidate of the PDP, Mr. Peter Obi in “appreciation for his outstanding contributions to the welfare of pensioners in Anambra State.”


Speaking on behalf of pensioners, their chairman, Comrade Anthony Ugozor said that the gesture extended to fmr Governor Obi was a way of reminding those responsible for managing pension funds anywhere that they will be judged and rewarded by what they do today. On what informed the award, Comrade Ugozor said: “His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi was so magnanimous that he paid pensioners their monthly pensions, paid all gratuities during his time and even paid 16 months arrears of pension and gratuities which Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju owed pensioners and at the same time started rice gifts to pensioners at Christmas time without making noise about it.”

Ugozor said that beyond routine payments, Mr. Peter Obi donated a lot of things to them, including a 14-seater bus. Obi was represented at the event by Mr. Dubem Obaze, Engr. Patrick Obi and Mr. Valentine Obienyem

Governor Peter Obi of Anambra has approved N1.3 billion for the payment of gratuity of retired local government workers in the state. Mr. Obi, who addressed some of the retired workers in Awka on
Wednesday, assured them that their money would be paid directly into their bank accounts.

He said the approval was for the payment of the last batch of outstanding gratuity owed retirees between November 2012 andnJanuary 2013.

According to him, this is the first time.in the history of Anambra that a government has cleared all the liabilities arising from gratuity of retired workers.

“What we are doing today is to give people their entitlements, we don’t owe gratuity.

“Today’s payment is the last batch of accrued gratuity, and so far, we have paid up to N33 billion,” the governor said.

He said the payment was not politically motivated, saying that “my concern today is to ensure that a leadership that will promote orderliness and accountability succeeds me.

“Everything has to be orderly to benefit everybody, and that is what I want to enthrone in Anambra,’’ he said.

After the infamous administration of Dr Chinwoke Mbadinuju (1999-2003), when pensioners were treated almost like destitutes, the ugly old days are snapping back. Why do I take exception to Anambra, you may ask? Are other states not guilty as charged?

Not exactly. Under the administration of Dr.Chris Ngige, pensions and gratuities were regular. It got better under Mr. Peter Obi who was exceptional in ensuring that pensioners got their dues in record time. Obi’s administration cleared over N35bn arrears of pensions and gratuities owed retirees since 1991.

Is it true that the Willie Obiano administration has defaulted big time in meeting these obligations?
