Crude Oil Discovered In Ara Orin, Kwara State by gfus: 11:43pm On Aug 14, 2011
KWARA State is set to join the list of oil-producing states in the country following the discovery of crude oil in Ara Orin in Irepodun Local Government Area of the state.

Governor Ahmed said the discovery was first highlighted by a farmer who discovered crude oil sprouting from his farm and seven other adjoining sites and alerted the state government.

Providing further clarification, he said geologists from the state Ministry of Industry and Solid Minerals were subsequently directed to confirm whether the substance was indeed crude oil and if so, identify the blend.

According to the governor, the ministry officials did not only confirm the substance as crude oil but identified the blend as Bonny Light, a high-grade of crude oil preferred by European and American refineries due to its unique properties, according to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Dr Muyideen Akorede.

Yoruba will not allow the exploitation of any other oil deposit in oduduwa land again after Ondo. We already discovered oil in Ogun and Lagos. Now it is Kwara and more importantly in a core Yoruba area not ilorin, we will frustrate any effort to exploit it.

Oil has not being tapped on shore for some time due to the terrible environmental degradation in Ogoniland. Both d IMO & Anambra basin has oil but it is not tapped because of d evil perpetuated in Ogoniland. To that farmer that found d black gold Sipping out of d ground on his farm, I would say it is a curse rather than a blessing not with the Maladministration in the oil industry and the Humpty-Dumpty  at d helms of affair in our nation.

If Kwara were an independent nation like Ghana I would dance a desirable dance for them  and going by recent political experience one can say they have had some fairly decent hands on deck when it comes to Governance in that state, but unfortunately they are tied to d apron of those drunken sailors at d centre who are prepared to spend every single cent they can lay their filthy hands on, on a debauching spree, harloting  & bigstouting to the shock and amazement of d God fearing people of Kwara.

The oil mineral deposit found in Ghana was greeted with fanfare & opportunism, why is this I once asked an elated Ghanian friend and he said so long one cent of their precious metal would not be managed by those drunken louts from your country, it calls for celebration and special thanks to God.

Crude oil exist in commercially feasible quantity in most state in Southern Nigeria. Look out for Osun, Ogun and Lagos,Oyo and Kogi  in months/ few years to come. Offshore drilling might actually be the way to go.

Finally,crude oil has been discovered in the North.More will still be discovered but the only gain is that it balances the equation of North being a parasite insinuated by some Nigerians despite the huge contribution in the agricultural sector.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You guys will not kill me. So you think this is how crude oil is discovered? Technical illiteracy na serious thing o.

What the farmer saw is most likely a seep from some shallow bitumen/tar sand deposit. Bitumen is not a new thing in the SW, estimates say there is as much as 33 billion barrels of bitumen in the Ogun-Ondo-Edo axis.

Even though our education is shiiiit these days, please do not insult our intelligence, are you telling us the ministry officials who would probably be Geologist, Geo-physicians and other soil and physical geographers don't know the diffrence between tar-sand bitumen and oil. I begi, it is like  u telling me a 'Masai' in Kenya does not know the diffrence between a Lion and a Leopard. Oil is not a remote or scarce commodity in Nigeria, we breathe it, we are blessed with it,  and it sips uncontrollable from our ground,  it would be unfathamable to think a qualified Geologist in Nigeria does not or has never seen an oil residual b4. I beg to differ.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION: Oil in Bayelsa is almost scoopable. The cost of extracting it from the ground is 'almost' neglible.

Niger state also made the same claim a few years back when a "substance was found to be sipping out of the ground. Lab tests confirmed that it wasn't crude oil.

There is no reason for me to have ever seen crude oil b4(that is not my field). I am Neither a Geologist, Geophysicist nor a Marine biologist, Soil biologist or a physical Geographer. Even with the poor state of our university, one would expect at least our Geologist or Geophysicist students to have taken excursion to Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta State for their field studies, and if they don’t, they should have ample oil samples and specific specimen in their Labs which would put credence to the as certainty of the product.

Your question is irrelevant to the discuss here.

Bonny Light oil is a high grade of Nigerian crude oil with high API gravity (low specific gravity), produced in the Niger Delta basin and named after the prolific region around the city of Bonny.

The very low sulfur content of Bonny Light crude makes it a highly desired grade for its low corrosiveness to refinery infrastructure and the lower environmental impact of its byproducts in refinery effluent.Other grades of Nigerian crude oil are Qua Iboe crude oil, Brass River crude oil, and Forcados crude oil. The Cabinda crude oil is a common grade of crude oil produced in Angola. The Bonny Light is in high demand specifically by American and European refineries. It is therefore a major source of income generation from the oil rich nation.

Kwara is mainly Yoruba. Ilorin has Fulani rulers (who bear Yoruba names), but thats it.

@topic
We can now expect an almighty bruhaha for Kwara to be split into two or more states. Where there is oil, there is sorriow.

@knowall

I asked that question because you wrote that oil recognition should be common place in Nigeria because we have plenty of it. I can assure you that not up to 20% of qualified geologists in Nigeria have seen crude oil before.

Anyway, that's deviating from the discussion here. My point is that you do not announce an oil discovery because a farmer saw somwthing seeping from the ground.

To give a background of my knowledge of this field, some of the most comprehensive studies on tar sands bitumen in Nigeria was done at my undergraduate department in Ife. I personally worked on it for my B.Sc thesis. I've therefater studied petroleum engineering at M.Sc level in the UK and have worked as a reservoir engineer for more than half a decade so I can say that I know what I'm talking about. If you go to Agbabu, Idiobilayo and Oloda in Ondo State, there have been oil seepages since time immemorial but that does not make them announce that they discovered oil. Have you asked the Kwara State government if they've drilled there to confirm that a reservoir exists and if it does, the commerciality? And no, there's nowhere in Nigeria where the oil is almost "scoopable". Ask the governor what depths the deposits are and the reservoir pressure? Can flow be assured? Whether the oil is light or heavy? What's the API gravity?

I don't want you to see the above as an attmpt to brag or whatever. My point is that government officials should not come out to display their ignorance under the guise that every other person is also ignorant. Do you think there'll be a discovery in Kwara State and the whole industry in Nigeria will not be quaking with excitement now?

I rarely post on the forum but I'll not sit back and watch misinformation flying around unchecked.
