Removal of Import/Export Restrictions means taxing the Restricted goods heavily but not banning or restricting the goods like it is done worldwide!! It is a tried and tested fiscal policy which will enrich the Treasury and help the local manufacturer in terms of Infrastructure and Subsidies!!
If you must import something, you will also be ready to pay whatever the FG wants or you manufacture the same locally!!
It is a free market which is determined by the comparative advantages of the importer or manufacturer!! That way no one is stifled and free market forces will hold sway!!

Very sound policy for those that understand International trade. Economies of scale will prohibit importation, without Government restrictions. Laws of demand and supply will be checkmated by Import costs versus manufacturing costs as well as natural market demands!

Its a pity everyone that is in 'opposition' to Obi-Datti. Is grasping at straws in trying to fault Peter Obis every move. Well it is expected!! This is like the story of the monkey and the Nut in a bottle! The looters of Nigeria are sore losers!! They don't want to release their grasp on Nigeria. While they are suffocating her and stifling her growth.

We will suffer or progress Together!! Even the looters and the looted!!

Wise Up!!
It doesn't cost a dime to be Obedient!!

Same the I said below
Mr. Peter Obi released a brilliant seven points agenda which was brilliant and inline with latest economic developmental principles ...lots of APC/PDP
quack economics who know absolutely nothing about developmental economics picked on the part where obi said he would "remove import and Forex restrictions " ... saying it would kill the economy

I laugh because that's a primitive way of thinking , and I'm not surprised that's APC way of thinking and have guided there policies since 2015 reason the economy has failed woefully ... protective economy policy never works for anyone let alone a country like ours that cant man our borders effectively

Let me use rice ( a product we all can relate to ) as an example , the APC government banned rice importation into Nigeria hoping with would help local rice farming grow but it's been 7 years and you can go to your local market it's Obvious local rice is less than 10% of rice in the market , so even with the ban foreign rice still enter our market ...we have lost all the revenue that we would have gotten if we allowed importation ...

The solution and what Peter Obi proposing is simple ...since the rice price has stabilized by the market forces at around 35k to 40k for foreign rice which means land cost ( the cost of getting the rice and smuggling it into Nigeria ) is around 30k to 35k ...price of rice internationally is around 450 dollars that's around 16k per bag say 18k plus shipping ... which means we can tax rice importers 15,000 per bag of imported rice ...with Nigeria rice importation said to be 40 million bags per year ..that would give us ...that would give us 600 billion in revenue ...yes APC government has been losing 600 billion yearly

Now with 600 billion war chest you can then begin to tackle the fundamental reasons why Nigerian rice can't compete with imported rice even tho we have cheaper labour and cheaper land ...which is mostly availability of quality seeds for planting , availability of farming and harvesting equipments , access to land for new intending farmers ... processing facilities and most importantly development of rice field clusters

With 100 billion yearly invested in 4 years we can have improved seeds available to every farmer that would guarantee minimum of 6 tons and land uses twice to three times yearly ...up from 1.5 tons once yearly we do now ...the rice farmer can harvest 10 times more from the same land area ...with would significantly reduce his unit cost giving him room to compete ...the idea is to make it possible for local farmers to sale local rice at 15k a bag and still make loads of profit ....

if the quality of the local rice is the same or at least 90% as good as the imported rice and the rice is half of the imported rice believe me rice importation would die a natural death

This is my take and I hope it helps you understand that removing trade restrictions and proper use of the revenue generated would help develop the economy and strengthen local industries

All I know is when we get Oduduwa nation no Hausa man will man our ports sea, air, or land. However, that alone will create jobs for our people. You will be allowed to import tools for free e.g. Tractors, building cranes, industrial tools, factories tools. 20% tax on materials. 50% tax on products that can be produced here. 70% tax on imported cars and 5% tax on made-in-Oduduwa vehicles. Monthly tax on vehicles not made in Oduduwa land. 80% tax on clothes not made in Oduduwa.★

Someone said that this will make Nigerian economy crumble.
Can you imagine so called literates?

This will not stop local production in any way.
This will bring competition as local producers will tend to reduce the cost of goods so as to penetrate the market.

No job will be lost instead, government will generate more revenue to create companies for employment.
This will bring competition between Nigeria's economy and other countries as foreign exchange will influence this

Imagine defending bad idea.

Buhari increase the tax on second hand cars and almost all the importer started using republic of benin to import and smuggle cars, Nigeria lost lot of revenue to smuggling and benin republic.

What most contries do is put total ban on all goods that can be produced locally, fund the various sector, give them tax break and let them boom.

OP, let’s discuss this “groundbreaking” idea of Peter Obi that will finally rescue the economy of Nigeria.

The items on the import prohibition list includes rice (through land borders), bagged cement, canned drinks, live and dead poultry products, vegetable oil, noodles, spaghetti, soap, footwear etc. These are items we are now producing substantially in Nigeria and as such, we don’t need to waste scarce forex on their importation.

Now that you guys are saying we should remove the restriction on the importation of these items, where exactly are we going to get forex to pay for these imports considering we are currently struggling to meet our import bills even with the restriction?

The higher taxes that will be imposed on these items will definitely be in Naira and as such, will add nothing to our forex. Even at that, the high taxes will be passed to the consumers thereby increasing the level of inflation. Again, Nigerians have a very high taste for foreign products as it depicts class and affluence. How will local producers of these items compete? When rice farmers and poultry owners start losing their market to imported products, what do you think will happen to the jobs in these sectors?

He is banking on his oratory prowess too get power because many people are dumb, and can not take thier time to dissec submissions from the presidential candiidates. They only folllow the crowd without asking questions

Re: Peter Obi : Removal Of Import / Export Restrictions by DECC: 2:45pm On Oct 07, 2022
There are goods that are prohibited from Export because the major players have Government connections and the restriction of the market suits their profits more! We have not explored our Bitumen deposits while importing Bitumen used for all the roads In Nigeria. MC1 and S125 Bitumen are mostly supplied by a few companies. A foreign company ASCA is one of the Biggest! Yet we have deposits of Bitumen in abundance. Personal interests overrides national interests... We have to tax luxury goods heavily instead of an outright ban. That is the right way forward.
The wastages of Governance is another major issue, we have concessions and waivers for certain individuals while the rest are subject to restrictions, why?
