Good day nairalanders
I'm a third class graduate in philosophy. I only choose to study to study the course after several failed attempt to study my desired course despite having a good jamb score. It was when my school changed my preferred course to philosophy i knew for the first time in my that philosophy is being studied in the university. I have been waiting long for admission and I don't want to keep staying home so i accepted it but after my first year i began to lose interest in the course and i got depressed. It really affected me mentally. Hence the poor grade.

Now, I'm 25 years currently serving and I am aware that the possibility of me ever getting a good job with that kind of certificate is highly slim especially with philosophy as my discipline. My mum has been asking me what is my plans after service and I am confused myself. Although, I have learn photography and I'm quite good at it but i haven't started earning from it. Besides, my mum is someone that values certificate over skills. So, she has been asking me if i can go for masters with my result which i usually assure her that it's possible.

The reason i bought this here is because she wants me to do the masters abroad (if possible Uk). Personally i want to do the masters in another course, preferably mass communication. So, I want to know if it's possible. How can i go about it? Which country is it best for me to go study? And aside from all these what else can i do as a third class graduate?

I'll be rounding up my service next year February. I am really confused on what to do next. cry Thank you

Dear writer,

I will highlight some of the options available to you from what I can deduce from your texts.

1. Getting your first job is the most likely way your 3rd class matters. At least I can speak for Nigeria as far as I know. I have worked for 7 years and have not gotten a job or missed an opportunity based on my certificate. Your ability to get a job is not tied to your degree alone. Be ready to start small. I, like many people, started my career from the absolute bottom. What matters most is your ability to climb faster. I know people who started working before me with better grades and qualifications, and I currently earn more than them and hold a higher position than them.
So, you can be rest assured that if your degree is going to matter, it is because you are applying for a graduate trainee position as you start out. But there are many alternatives to working in a bank, oil and gas, or the big 4. Also, like you, my first degree is from the faculty of arts, and it is not even English Literature or mass comm. So your course is not limiting. Only your drive, grit, and resolve can limit you from making something of your life.

Alternatively, you can start your own business. And I can also assume you can afford to start a business because you are talking about doing a master's, which usually doesn't come cheap, especially in the UK. This brings me to my last thoughts. You can learn a traditional skill or digital skill. I worked in tech with my arts background.

You can still do your Msc or MA even with a third class. Most schools require a minimum of 2:2, but you can do a post-graduate diploma first to better your chances.

I wish you all the best.
