The birth of new born babies is always heralded with joy but there was shock and disbelief as a woman gave birth to a baby without a head at the General Hospital in Iyin-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

PUNCH METRO gathered that the middle-aged woman (whose name medical workers refused to give) gave birth to the strange creature around 2pm on Thursday.

A medical official, who pleaded not to be named, said the woman was delivered of the strange creature through cesarean section.

According to him, the baby’s mother, who was still unconscious due to the sedation before the CS, did not see the creature which was quickly disposed in order to save the parents from embarrassment.

The father of the baby, the source said, was present at the delivery room and approved that the strange creature should be buried immediately.

The source told our correspondent on the telephone that the baby which had two bulging eyes had few strand of hair on his forehead.

“The baby did not have brains. His head was opened at the back and you can see mucus inside the head instead of brains. It was strange. Nobody in the hospital had seen such baby before,” he added.

Another source added the strange baby was very small at birth. He added that the delivery was abnormal as the fluid, which was drained from the mother’s body, was in excess of normal quantity.

The woman was said to have gone for series of scan in some private hospitals where she was told that she was going to give birth to a set of twins.

But it was gathered that the parents were hinted by the officials of the General Hospital, Iyin, that the woman was carrying only one foetus and it was headless.

The source said that they believed that the baby must have been deformed due to the effects of some drugs or herbs.

He said, “That is why we always ask pregnant women not to take any drugs unless they were prescribed by doctors. We can’t also rule it out that the deformity might have been caused by concoction. It is possible.

“But one aspect which does not have scientific backing but which could be the cause is the spiritual factor. Who knows, the baby could be from the spirit world.”

The Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr. Wole Olugboji, who confiormed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone said the woman had earlier given birth to two normal babies before this incident.

“There was a woman who gave birth to anencephalic baby ( headless baby). The baby is dead as you might have been told but the woman is stable. It is one of the congenital malformation,” Olugboji said.

He explained that the deformity might have been as a result of drugs taken by the woman especially in the early months of the pregnancy or it could be as a result of chromosome disorder.

He advised pregnant women to always go for ante-natal and never to take drugs without doctors prescriptions.

Headless births happen.
Not often, but they happen.
Here's hoping the woman recovers fully.
