Who Is A Professional Logo Designer? by TruthHurts100: 5:05pm On Oct 08, 2022
A professional in general is someone with vast knowledge and experience in a field. Hense, a professional logo designer is that person with a vast knowledge and experience in the brand identity design space.

Many are quick to label themselves professional. We have been able to educate a handful of designers. We opened their eyes to what a "Logo Design Process" is. But a lot of more work is needed for them to fully understand the phases in this process.

To know a professional in this space you must be or have the following in no particular order.

1. An Indepth knowledge and experience in logo design. You should be able to point to at least 3 logo design projects that you have executed from start to finish and be bold enough to point to those brands and how the logo has impacted the brands.

2. You should be able to educate the clients of the best practices in logo design and usage. If you are still allowing the clients control your design process, maybe you're not that professional yet.

3. You must have a rate card and a logo design contract template.

4. You must have a portfolio displaying your past projects and the summary of the problems the projects are to fix.

5. You must have your logo design company registered. How can you be a professional when you're doing business under an entity not recognised by the government.

6. You must be design with vectorbased design softwares like Ai and Corel. Photoshop is a Pixelbased software. No professional designs a logo with PS.

It is a lot. Looking at the aforementioned, none of them will be charging anything below $200 for a logo design project.

This might rain on your parade but its for your own good if you see this and use it to grow.

Ps: I hear this when designers are trying to sell themselves.

1. Professional logo
2. I will design a brand
3. Logo brand etc

Make research and understand the correct terms.

If you have learned a thing or two or you'd like to add to what has been said..... You can do a reply.

Selah.

An Obvious Logo is a Bad Logo

What is an obvious logo?
It is a logo that tries too hard to depict what the business does. Seeing the logo, you know what the company does. A great logo should evoke a feeling in a unique way. It should be simple and memorable. If after seeing a logo in 5 seconds, you can't sketch the logo on paper, that logo has failed the memorability test.
So when a logo is too obvious, its either is generic or in other word not unique or it is so complex that its hard to remember.

How can you avoid designing an obvious logo?
Keep at the back of your mind that in this time and age, a logo is not meant to tell people what you do but to evoke a feeling, something they should look forward to enjoying when they interact with your business.

Apple logo doesn't show us they make PCs and phones does it?

Sony logo doesn't tell us they make electronics and phones. First Bank logo doesn't tell us anything about money....

So in yours questionnaire, ask the clients for upto 5 adjectives that describe their brand and another 5 that describe the benefit their target audience is to expect to enjoy. Remember, you're designing the logo not for your client but their target audience. This is why as a professional you cannot allow them control you. If they don't like the logo, its not your business.
I mentioned earlier that you need to draw up an agreement before accepting any logo design project. In this agreement, a clause stating that the logo will be designed based on the interest of the company's target audience should be stated.

See, if you are desperate, you are yet to be a pro. There are logo design jobs I reject mere talking to the client. I'm tired... Later.

If you have questions, pls ask.

There is this reality that many has refused to confess. Lol! We all somehow yearn for an opportunity to do whatever we want without being judged. This is my banter account. I throw all cautions to the wind. I can curse, insult and do gbasgbos as required and I can still add value to poeple who are Interested. If you need Logo design or General graphics design book, send me a mail. I have been sending to people. It might be slow but I will definately send. Maybe I will build a community of logo design ethusiasts as time goes.

If there is something about Logo Design you'd want me to talk about, please leave a comment.

Let me help you be more confident when charging for a logo design

In developed economy, many startups spends like 35 - 40% of their capital on brand Identity design. Hense, anybody that knows what he or she is doing knows that logo design is not cheap. A cheap logo design will also make the brand look cheap and amaturish. So, the clients are doing you no good giving you a job but you are the one doing them a big favour, So charge them. They will make millions with that logo. Chop your own now.

A long time ago I charged a client 75k for a logo design. In my mind back then, I have charged big money. One day I just said I should search for the brand on google (Gu-gu) I was dazed. Each product that my logo is on costs like $25, Imagine how much they will make selling in the next 5years. I hope you gerrrit?

Some that know the value of a logo will try to rip you off because its Naija and they believe we dont know the value. No gree for them ooo.

One secret
If you allow yourself work for cheap clients, More cheap clients will be coming to you and it will be almost impossible to breakout. It wont be easy at times because of SAPA but just try. I won't do a N150k logo like dis sef. Its big money but I am trying to scall up to $1000 per logo. My colleagues are charging more than that.

To sharpen your skills, go to Design Crowd, register and join the design competitions, It will help you alot.

Again, I don taya. Next time.

Regards
