If you look at the picture, areas of flooding are purely water ways which begged the question; why would people build houses in water ways?

Shey, we are all seeing the consequences.

This is a natural disaster! Even the best of places with good drainages can suffer this.

This is man made not natural disaster
The flood is caused by a dam in Cameroon
These areas flooded are water ways sold to people by omonile grin shishi dey will not get as compensation
If not that institutions change mandate as new government takes charge, those houses are not supposed to be there.

Another postulate.
Let me humbly ask this question.
Who is not on a waterway in all of Lokoja... Lagos island, Makurdi, Onitsha and other locations under threat. Is waterway a factor of location or rainfall.

If rain falls a day longer, a week longer, a month longer, for three more months till the year ends won't it redefine the location of these 'WATERWAYS', because we have all heard this saying that, 'water will always find it's level and chart it's course.

So when you are considering buying that land or processing that CofO, who do you consult for safety, a town planner, an environmentalist, geographer or a metrologist.... just asking?

Debate.... after looking at the pictures again... carefully.

My heart goes out to the affected people. If not that Nigeria is a failed nation, government will help them out as I know that lost and damaged properties will require a lot of money to fix up.
My happiness is that I haven't heard of any casualty

Hundreds have died in this year flood.

95% if not more, of the houses, how ever fancy they may look built in water ways seen those pictures are illegal structures. Even when the relevant authorities mark such areas for NO ENCROACHMENT due dangers it poses, people disregard and still build.

And that's why you see people building structures under and near high tension electrical wires, building structures that are competing with roads despite repeated warnings but when shit hits the fan..they will be shouting "goffment ,"goffment" .....who walks on train tracks because you think it's a pedestrian track?

This is really sad.

The structure of those houses would be weak and very compromised now.
The structures are experiencing a process called curing. grin

The flood is usually pretold before it happens. I've heard many agencies call for the Dams to be worked on, drainages cleared in that area and all to mitigate the flood..it feels like it's never done.
I can't forget the first time it escalated in 2012.
I was travelling as a corper from Benin to Jigawa.
That road was unplyable. The rivers had over flowed their bank, farms produce unharvestable, houses submerged, communities made homeless. Traffic we met at Lokoja was 2 weeks old. We had to use a crane to cross our bus tru the nearby River. The scariest experience of my life. One crane carried 2 buses loaded with 15 passengers and 1 small car. 15k per vehicle to cross us.
My heart sank over an over in this 10 mins of one of the riskiest moves of my life. Like what if the crane just bends?, We'd just sink.
Kai!.
Years after it's still same.

I did my youth service in kogi. In a town just on the other side of lokoja across the river Niger. We use to come to lokoja to buy alll the essential things we need. I can't mention the number of times I have crossed the river with that ferry or with a boat.they don't even give you al life boat. There was this day the engine of the ferry went off while we were in the middle of the river and it was tilting to one side, my heart sank. na so I begin to dey pray to God say make I see the next day

I reserve my laughter for the state emmergency management agency(SEMA) who will come up with a bag of rice, beans, milk, garri and sugar to claim a hundred truck of food items shared to flood victims.

Try to understand the difference between flooding and river overflow.

Flooding comes from a heavy downpour. A river overflow is as a result of the river unable to contain a huge amount of water.
Dredging the river basin is one way to tackle this. Remove the excess sands accumulated over the years from the river so it can handle more volumes of water.

The deeper the river the less space its waters takes on the adjoining banks or land.

You said it, dredging and construction of dam would have solve this. Been proactive to this is not money or time wasting but to protect/guard against things like this.

We have alot of solutions but zero political will:

(1) Dredging River Niger, all the water will flow straight to the Atlantic ocean.

(2) Build dams.. to store some of these water.. and release them for irrigation to the northern farmers during dry season

Good point my brother, most solutions to problem in Nigeria is just simply as ABC. They would not adhere to these solutions because their pocket is not part of it.

Yeah....2012 was the last time something like this happened. Same thing happened in Onitsha/Asaba and this year is worse than 2012. Anambra and Delta are facing same challenges. A 3 storey building in my former church in Onitsha.....Madonna Catholic Church Acha fell today due to the flood, thank God I was told church activities stopped there since about 2 weeks ago due to the flood. Now Churches and Schools in Ogbaru, Atani and those affected areas are suspended till further notice. May God help us

Says who?

If there isn't good drainage system, building of houses along water paths, blockage of water channels etc, there'll always be flooding. Many things happened due to man made mistakes. This is a man made error

So the flooding in New-York, Florida, Japan and Paki callstan were man made?

Or do we say the state governors are incompetent?
