CASTING ALL YOUR CARES (6)

Main text - 1st Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

In our devotion today, we will be considering one of the 'siamese kids' of worry called FEAR.

Firstly, worry as we have seen is to negatively brood over, ponder on or mutter contrary thoughts. In other words, we can actually describe worry as faith in our fears; a fear in unforseen, unpleasant or unwanted life circumstances or negative situations.

As a believer, it is important to know and note that worry in itself is a sin and often leads to sin, let alone when it degenerates further into fearful thoughts or actions. To be in fear is to not be in faith and this in itself goes against about 365 instructions spread across the scriptures to 'fear not or be not afraid'. Oftentimes, when we allow worry to set in, with fear in its company, whatever potential we had to accomplish our plans, desires or pursuits is almost immediately paralyzed and we're worse off than before. Many times again, if we look back on many of the instances that we had been worried or fearful of an evil or unpleasant outcome, we'll realize that worry or fear actually exaggerated the issues or situation and painted pictures of I'm possibilities to things that we eventually discovered as easily resolved.

With some sense of humor, if we cast our minds back to Jesus’s words as documented by Matthew, we'll realize that he was actually speaking about the futility of worry. It cannot add a cubit of life to one nor does it mean the problems will go away because we worried about in deeply

Matthew 6:27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

So, neither fear nor worry ought to be given room or dwelt upon for more than a minute. Yes, when you hear about that loss of job or contract, or that life-threatening illness or an uncertainty about the future, worry and/or fear comes to your heart but take not those thoughts for too long, rather think and speak out what your heavenly has given you to say in his word.

CONFESSION- I disallow fearful thoughts from dominating my mind, I rather exalt God's word above those thoughts.

CASTING ALL YOUR CARES (5)

Main text - 1st Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

We have seen so far that it is legitimate to have cares, desires or wants for the good things of life. However, as we examine the effect of uncontrolled desires, today, we will be emphasizing the need to stay in God's will even as we pursue our earthly ambitions, cares or desires. This is particularly important as the believer must know thav if he refuses to put a lid on or control his desires, they can lead him out of God's will for his life.

For instance, the love of money can be said to stem from our desires to do or have things at all cost such that a hitherto fervent Christian worker or leader on the university campus, graduates and is so carried away with ambition or life's pressures that he doesn't even care that the new job he's offered is going to take him away from church and the fellowship of the saints as long as the pay is right. Same goes for that simply devoted sister who suddenly starts considering the societal pressure to get married before 30 and bows in desperation to a marriage proposal from an unbeliever, or the one who neglects the Christian virtue of generosity in giving and rather lives in fear as motivation for saving such that he can neither give in church or to fellow believers.

A Christian must watch out for these and any signs that shows that his or her needs have become a fearful and motivating factor in all of his or her decision making. He must see to it that nothing takes the place of making spirit-inspired decisions and following God's plans for his life. In abundance or lack, he must yet strive to stand perfect and complete in all the will of God and let his (God's) peace rule his heart.

Colossians 4:12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.

Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

CONFESSION- I stay right in the center of God's plans and purposes for my life, I don't walk out of it in pursuit of the lusts of this world.

CASTING ALL YOUR CARES (4)

Main text - 1st Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Having seen that God, our father, wants us to prosper (this includes and is not limited to a good career or business, a good spouse or marriage, good health, access to the best medical care possible while all the time enjoying divine healing as well etc), believers must never live in fear of owning or having things but must equally see to it that that these things don't own or have them, that is, We must realize that the scriptures teach gravely against the love of money or mammon, often as a warning against idolizing or exalting our needs above our Christian pursuits or godly conduct

Matthew 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

The need to get things done or have things must not be allowed to dictate how we do things. Yes, we have a right to desire good things including money but what the scriptures teach against is uncontrolled desires or lusts leading to worry. The system of this world thrives on worry; it is naturally designed to promote an endless rat-race filled with pursuits for insatiable wants and/or luxuries, this the bible describes as things the believer must be wary/weary of lest he pierces himself with many sorrows and makes a shipwreck of his faith. Hence the bible teaches godliness with contentment as great gain

1st Timothy 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. Vs 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
Vs 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
Vs 9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
Vs 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

CONFESSION - I'm born of the spirit, I exercise temperance, self-control over my wants and walk in contentment.

CASTING ALL YOUR CARES (7)

Main text - 1st Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Today, we want to consider worry's other 'siamese kid' called DOUBT. To doubt is slightly different from stark unbelief but more often than not leads to unbelief. It is best described as processing or mulling over two contrary thoughts. It in that middle road or two-forked junction between either acting in faith on God's word, exalting it above the apparent circumstances or acting in fear (often times in the realm of the senses, with many a believer falling into the trap of the mantra "let's be real, let's not deceive ourselves"wink and considering the circumstances as the reality above God's word.

The scriptures are replete with examples to learn from in this regard, men and women who at different times were presented with conflicting or contrary opinions or thoughts such as Abraham who rather than consider the apparent fact that his body was dead (old) chose to hope against hope and received strength to bear Isaac (Romans 4:17-18); the widow of Zarephath who was to prepare her last meal for her child and herself yet gave it over to the prophet Elijah in honour and was blessed for it (1st Kings 17: 9-16); the hemorrhaging woman who had been sick for 12 years and been to diverse medical experts yev considered the greater report of Jesus' healing ministry as valid and got healed despite the crowd and Jesus not even planning to heal her (Mark 5:25-34)

Therefore, while doubt might not be avoidable, the believer must be quick to stop it from degenerating into fear or unbelief by choosing always to exalt God's word above the contrary circumstances even in the face of apparent defeat

CONFESSION- I am born of God, what is natural to me is to believe his word, this I do and exalt above the pressures of life

CASTING ALL YOUR CARES (cool

Main text - 1st Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

As we consider casting our cares on the Lord, it's important to also consider how to handle or manage unmet desires ob expectations. Here, we'll take a cue from the life of Abraham as documented in the scriptures.

First, let's consider how he and a host of others were described in the New Testament

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen...

Vs 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

It is important to quickly state here that at no point should this text be applied as an omnibus definition for faith. This is because in its strictest sense, this text in Hebrews was a particular reference to old testament saints who hoped for the Messiah and believed it before it actually happened.

However, what we seek to learn from them in today's study was how their world (different times or dispensation) were shaped by the word of God,that is, unlike some others in their generation, they were called men of faith because they held on their expectation of the Messiah which couldn't have made logical sense to some others then.

While this refers to salvation, we can go further to see that Abraham yet exercised faith with respect to his child Isaac. He and Sarah had every reason to give up on the unmet expectation of a child, yet when he chose to align himself with God's word (evident in his change of name from Abram to Abraham) and his expectations were met (Genesis 17).

Hence, as believers, a notable fact is that, despite life's challenges, pressures or setbacks, we are overcomers and like Abraham, must keep our expectations intact and call the things that be not as though they were (Romans 4:17)

CONFESSION- I win all the time, I keep my expectations and call the things that be not as though they were

CASTING ALL YOUR CARES (9)

Main text - 1st Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Today, we will now examine how to actually cast our cares on the Lord, as life's pressures and challenges come at us, what is expected of us as believers.

Firstly, it is always good to start by counting one's blessings rather than one's lack. They are number of things we have that we have taken for granted while murmuring and complaining about the things we're yet to have.

Take for instance, Jesus himself teaches us to value and appreciate the very fact that we have life, he says life is more important than its needs. As believers, we must realize that every opportunity to see a new day is a demonstration of God's grace and tender mercies, another opportunity to yet experience more victories and testimonies

Lamentation 3:22 It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
Vs 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Moreso, as believers, we're to be grateful for salvation, eternal life in Christ Jesus, the gift of God in our local church and the benefits of fellowship with the saints. No day ought to pass by without thanksgiving in this regard.

Let's learn to be grateful and not murmurers, this in itself stifles the voice of doubt, anxiety, worry or fear and makes us hopeful for yet another and a better day.

CONFESSION- I am thankful for the gift of eternal life, for the gifts of God in my local church and the fellowship of the saints.

CASTING ALL YOUR CARES (10)

Main text - 1st Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
Vs 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

As we learn about casting our cares on the Lord, there are yet two more things to consider;

- Our words

Our words either express our faith, fear or worry. Whilst we can't stop worries or pressures from coming to us, we can decide how they affect us, we can choose to take or reject them, all in our words. The believer must know that worry, anxiety, doubt or fear will die unborn or unproductive until they are spoken in words.

Jesus teaches us a salient principle in this regard, we will have what we say (not what others says)

Mark 11:23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

- Prayer

Now, many times we're quick to jump into praying about a worrisome situation but this oftentimes is not productive as we must first deal with the worry (having sufficiently spoken God's word about the situation and effectively renewed our minds well enough to believe the word) before we pray. We must learn to pray in faith and not in fear like Job did.

Job 3:25 For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.
Vs 26 I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.

Peter in our main text lets us see that worry is an opening for the devil, a proof that we're not in faith about the matter. So, as believers, let us let the Lord do the caring and not us, else we're in doubt.

CONFESSION - I consciously cast my cares and worries on the Lord, for I know he cares for me.

BE ANXOUS FOR NOTHING (3)

Matthew 6:25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
Vs 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

Vs 31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? Vs 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seeksmiley for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

Anxiety and worry can sometimes arise from legitimate desires and needs. Jesus however admonishes not to be needs- conscious which leads to apprehension and agitation but to be Father-conscious.

Hence, he taught to ask the Father whatsoever we desire in prayer (amongst other instructions), knowing that the Father knows our needs before we ask him.

Matthew 6:7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
Vs 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

Jesus was by no means saying that praying for long is unscriptural as he himself often prayed for long periods of time for men (Luke 6:12, Mark 1:35).
He rather consistently admonishes that when it comes to things and needs, we must not be anxious as the Gentiles do because we know and trust our heavenly Father who knows what we have need of before we ask. He taught them to ask the Father;

Mark 11:24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

John wrote about this also.

1st John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
Vs 15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

The statement “according to His will”, should not be misconstrued to mean, for God to hear us when we pray for our desires, it must be according to his will. If that was what he meant, John would not have said,”This is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything... whatsoever we ask... ” The words “anything and “whatsoever” simply imply that we are the ones that determine our needs/what we need , while His will is to hear when we ask. Thus, His will is to hear us when we ask based on the knowledge of our union with the Father in Christ which brings that confidence(freedom of speech) to make requests unto Him, whatsoever we need.

CONFESSION: I am in union with the Father, I am God’s Son. I am not needs-conscious but Father-Conscious. Therefore I am not worried because he hears me as a son when I pray

YOUR WORDS EXPRESS WORRY OR FAITH (1)

You sure cannot stop a bird from flying over your head, but you sure can stop it from building a nest in your hair. In the same way, you cannot stop life’s pressures and worries from coming at you but you can definitely stop it from having an influence over your life and affecting you.

How then do we stop worry and anxieties?

Matthew 6:31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

“...Take no thought saying...” –

This is very instructive.

Our words give room to worry, fear and anxiety.

Say not “How do I get this job? How do I sustain my family? How will I not backslide but serve God? How do I become a doctor or an engineer, How do I get this, do this or that...?

Mark 11:23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

Jesus says “You have what you say”. Hence, if you worry, you have your worries but doubt, fear and worry will die unborn until they are spoken in words.

So when the believer prays in worry it’s a waste of time.

Mark 11:24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

You must first deal with worry before you pray. You can’t worry and pray at the same time. You will first refuse to take the thought. However, what we often wrongly do is that we are praying and praying, we’re giving thanks and grumbling, trusting God and fretting.

God will not deal with worry for you. You will have to deal with worry by yourself because you can.

2nd Corinthians 4:13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;

To deal with worries and anxiety, use your words in faith. Declare you are blessed, Say “I WIN” in the face of apparent failure. Your life rises and falls on your words. Same for your ministry. Your words will catch up with you. Faith unspoken is faith non-existing. Faith works in two places; in the heart and in the mouth (Romans 10:9-10).
Everything in the Spirit is voiced out in faith.

CONFESSION
I have the Spirit of Faith, therefore I believe and receive, I speak and I have what I say!
I refuse to be worried or anxious. There is no fear in my future, there is no fear here! I WIN!

YOUR WORDS EXPRESS WORRY OR FAITH (4)

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Oftentimes, many believers get anxious as a result of misconceptions or misunderstandings about the character of God. God is a giving God and He is good. The Greek construction of this verse have the adjective “giving” before God like “Let him ask of the Giving God.”

The word “Giveth” implies an offering. It implies that in God’s character, he doesn’t ask for requirements but makes available

The word “Liberally” implies “single-mindedness.” It is therefore clear that God is single-minded on Giving. He will only give, expecting nothing in return.

This means before we ask, God makes available.

The word “Upbraid” was translated from a word that implies to pre-qualify, to see faults. It is used for reproach, however God does not find fault or reject.

So the double-minded man knows that God gives liberally but goes on to have another view of God.

Thus James says to pray to the “Giving God” who doesn’t find fault. Hence we must not have a picture of a God that you have to call on and cry on but to a God who is single-minded about Giving and doesn’t find fault.

John says He is Light;

1st John 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

John preaches the love of God in the light.

1 John 1:7-9. He is Faithful and just to forgive and cleanse us
from all our sins. This is fellowship – the light.

1st John 2:8-12 He writes to the believer and says the truth, the light is in him which is forgiveness of sins. So John exonerates God and says there is no darkness - unforgiveness in God just like Peter did and thus questions the believer who does not walk in love.

1st John 5:11-13The word “record” was translated from a word used for reputation, something consistent with a man. This is the reputation of God – Eternal Life in Christ, every other information about him is a rumour and defamation of character.

CONFESSION: I believe that God is good, He is a Giving God, He does not find fault, He is light
and in Him there is no darkness at all. This Character of God is true in all situations, He is
Love and forgiving. He loves and gives me good things to enjoy.

*YOUR WORDS EXPRESS WORRY OR FAITH (5)*

*James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.*

The word “variableness” was translated from a word that implies a variation, a change, a mutation, or something that is enhanced. So there is no mutation, growth, increase or decrease about God. One of the wrong notions we have is when we think God is the one that changed. He is the same yesterday, today and forever.

The word “turning” implies a shift or or to change. In other words, there is no shift of view. So, God doesn't give one view today and present another some other time.

The word “Shadow” implies something like sunset, fainting images, not a full light, dim light.

The reference about the Old Testament folks not having the revelation of God is not God speaking in shadows because God doesn’t speak in shadows, he doesn’t have that manner or that thought.

See how James had earlier described God. He had one of the most practical explanations of God. One who GIVES, The only thing God takes away is SIN and that taking away is a GIFT.

Verse 16 is the pretext - this was the reason for verse 17

Verse 16 Do not err my beloved brethren – Not to err will only be by the word.

That means it’s possible for a believer to err.

The word “Err” implies to deceive. That word was used in Matthew 24:4-5,11 for the antiChrist leading men astray. It implies there will be an element of championing the error.

Matthew 22:29 “Ye err because you know not the scriptures neither the power of God.”

Ephesians 4:13-14 It means to cause you to miss the way.

1st Corinthians 6:9 Do Not be deceived, that is, do not be led
astray.

This was also used in 1st Corinthians 15:33 and Galatians 6:7.

That word goes beyond an action to living in deception.

Hence, we must NOT relate with God according to our experiences or the experience of others but according to the Word.

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

What is the gift?

Everything we have known about God is in man, however we can’t know God in man’s desire, neither can we know God in man’s drawn away appeal. We can only know God in the New creature which is in Christ Jesus – His Gift.

CONFESSION: I see God in the New Creation in Christ. He is Good, there is no evil him. He does not change. Hence I am not anxious because I know He is a Good God.

YOUR WORDS EXPRESS WORRY OR FAITH (6)

Philippians 2:14 Do all things without murmurings and
disputings:

When we are anxious, we are not thankful and when we are not thankful, we act as murmurers. A murmurer is someone who murmurs. To murmur means to complain.

How to become a murmurer?

1. Murmuring is a choice: murmuring is something you choose to do. It is not an evil spirit.

2. When you refuse to count little blessing: Matthew 5:43-44 shows that the sun, rain are blessings. Imagine life without rain and sunshine. There are little things we often take for granted but they are blessings anyway. Learn to give thanks for them, for example, your Pastors and leaders, your spouse etc.

3. When you meditate on problems and challenges

4. When you curse life without saying so

5. Those who murmur never praise God from their heart. Little blessings are great things so when you thank God, think about those blessings, name them one by one.

Matthew 15:8 Jesus said some honour God with their lips but their heart is far from God.

Colossians 3:16

Ephesians 5:18-19 You are to thank God in your heart so praise
should come from the heart.

1st Corinthians 10:10 murmuring opens up the door to the devil. The people in the wilderness murmured and were destroyed by the destroyer. They opened the door to the destroyer.

You can’t be in faith and complain. It is when you are not in faith that you complain.

Philippians 2:14-15 murmuring is a bad example for the believer.

Acts 16:25 midnight is a tough time e.g. you are sick in the body or you have a need. It is when things don’t go nicely. Paul raised his voice in praise so you have to raise your voice in praise rather than complain.

CONFESSION: I choose not to murmur, I refuse to complain rather I am thankful to God, for every good thing in life and in Christ.

*A NEW CREATURE IN CHRIST-2*

2nd Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

The new creature is the man in Christ. He is only known and identified in Christ.

The new creature was prophesied (spoken ahead of time) in the Old Testament by David and Ezekiel;

Psalms 102:18 This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the LORD.

“The generation to come” meant it was a future event.
The generation to come are “the people that shall be Created”.
The word “created” implies there was no prior existence.
Hence, it couldn’t have been talking of the first Adam. This clearly refers to the new creature! A new species, a new breed and kind of man, a new kind of humanity in the last Adam.

Ezekiel 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. Vs 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

Vs 28 And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.

The terms “new heart”, “new spirit” “within you” all point to the new creature.

Ezekiel was speaking ahead of time of the man in Christ. A new specie, a new kind of humanity in Christ. Based on their make up, they will act on God’s word.

2nd Corinthians 1:20 For all the promises of God in him [are] yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. Vs 21 Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, [is] God;

“Yea and amen” means fulfilled. All of God’s promise have been fulfilled in Christ.

Romans 15:8 Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises [made] unto the fathers:

The word, “Confirm” means to establish, to found, to make to stand. Therefore Jesus fulfilled all of God’s promises.

The prophecy concerning the new creature was fulfilled in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. The new creature is God’s making in Christ.

Hence, the new creature is a new humanity in Christ. A new breed in the last Adam.

*Confession:*
*I acknowledge that I am a new creature in Christ. I am born of God. I have his nature and his spirit dwelling in me forever. I see myself the way God sees me in Christ.*

A NEW CREATION IN CHRIST (3)

2nd Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a
new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

The new creature is the man in Christ. This is a function of the new birth. As soon as a man believes the gospel, he is identified in the finished work of Christ.

Galatians 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Vs 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Vs 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Paul kept emphasizing our identification in Christ.

The word “baptized” into Christ means immersed into, identified in Christ. This identification was simply by faith in Christ Jesus.

Hence, the new creature is not called to imitation but identification. This helps us see why the word “disciples” was rarely used for believers in the epistles after the book of Acts. The word “disciples” was carried on from the four gospels (the disciples of Jesus, John) into the book of Acts.

The new creature will be indwelt by the spirit! Jesus also had taught about the new creature in

*John 14:3...that where I am, there ye may be also *

*John 14:20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.*

*Verse 23...we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.*

Hence, the new creature will be the man in Christ. This was fulfilled when Jesus died and rose from the dead. The believer in Christ is a new creature! To see the believer otherwise is to see wrongly. It is to have a mistaken identity. He is newly born just like a new born baby! We are born of God, we are of God, we hail from God.

CONFESSION: I acknowledge that I am a believer. I am identified in the finished work of Christ.
