The Internet has become a fundamental tool in people's lives, despite the fact that the reputation of this service has been tarnished over time due to the appearance of inappropriate uses and risks of new technologies: there are many benefits that contribute.

If the Internet has something, it is information. As they point out from the security and digital well-being platform Qustodio, "it is the new encyclopedia". Wikipedia has more than 1.5 million articles in Spanish alone, which prevents us from having to go to the physical volumes of the old encyclopedias that used to be around the house, with the added advantage that by just pressing a button we can access all kinds of information immediately that is always up to date.

The Internet also allows learning by playing. There are millions of applications for children to learn new things while playing, such as Kahoot!, Toovari or Smartick.

Internet, thanks to the digitization of documents, any file is stored on a web page, platform or electronic device, such as a tablet. This means that we no longer have to carry physical books with hundreds of pages and an average of 500 grams, which can stay at home.

It also allows us to be self-taught. According to a Google study, the search for explainer videos and tutorials of this type grows by 70 per cent each year. This means that more and more people learn to play the guitar or cook a fried egg using the Internet as their only teacher.

But not only does it teach us things, but it also improves and speeds up our learning. An experiment by Toshiba and La Salle Bonanova nursery school in Barcelona offered laptops to students to help them with their education. The result was that 84.6 per cent of the students finished the term with a math grade of 7 or higher compared to 57.7 per cent of the class that did not use computers.

The greatest advantage that the Internet offers is that it favours communication, for example, through smartphones. It does not matter the place, the moment or the hour; it is possible to contact another person. Thus, parents can contact their children at all times, but it also connects us with anyone in the world, either through social networks, video calls or by email.

And it increases creativity. New technologies offer a wide variety of tools that, if used properly, can be of great help in fostering creativity and imagination in children. An example of this is the 3D printers specially designed so that minors can design and print their own toys.
As Manuel Bruscas, vice president of Qustodio points out, "new technologies do not have to be harmful, as long as they are used correctly and being aware of their possible risks".

"It is useless to ban them, it is best to educate them in their correct use to take advantage of all their advantages," says Bruscas.
