UAE Government Sentences Nigerian Woman To One-year Jail Term Over Twitter Post by TheFacelessMan: 10:31pm On Oct 22, 2022
A Nigerian woman, identified as @dunchichi on Twitter, has been reportedly sentenced to a one-year jail term by the United Arab Emirates government for a social media post, showing how some Nigerian nationals were illegally detained at Dubai international airport.

On 31st August, @dunchichi posted on Twitter how she was detained together with other Nigerians despite possessing a valid visa.

"I'm at Dubai international airport and myself and some tiger Nigerians with valid Visas are being held in a room hours after arriving with no explain and no information on what we can do. Please help me. There's more than 20 of us," she wrote.

But another user, @jerrydoubles, who claimed to be her relative, on Saturday announced that @dunchichi had been sent to jail for an offence relating to her earlier post in Dubai

He said, "It is sad and regrettably heartrending to tell you all that @dunchichi was sentenced on 12th Oct 22, to 1yr in jail in Dubai. Her family are devastated and Nigeria didn't save her. Cc @nidcom_gov @DavidHundeyin @FS_Yusuf_ @SavvyRinu @mrmacaronii @MobilePunch @daily_trust RT.

"Her sentence came from the backdrop that she got a family visa to travel. But in fact, she was there with her sister. It got messy & complicated, she was released on arrival after being detained for several hours, only to be sentenced when she was returning to Nigeria.

"They are capitalising on the fact that she made a video then posted them on her Twitter timeline to narrate the ordeal. They said it's cybercrime in their country. She went ahead to delete it. Still, that didn't soften them. Now she is jailed #justicefordinci."

He further added that her family were planning to protest her conviction at the Dubai consulate office in Abuja.

"If you stay in Abuja or know someone who does and would love to join us," his tweet added.

SaharaReporters had also reported that the United Arab Emirates government on Friday announced a visa ban on Nigerians, adding that all submitted applications are rejected and fees non-refundable.

The ban was announced in a notice issued by UAE immigration authorities to its trade partners in Nigeria including travel agencies.

angry

Arab countries believe very much in totalitarian rule. You DON'T question their leaders.

The current Crown Prince of Saudi Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud jailed some female protesters for championing female rights. He himself is a strong advocate for gender empowerment.

Their offence was telling the Government what to do. Despite the fact that was the direction the Government was already going!

Some Northerners were making a lot of noise about the Saudi King shaking the hand of Angel Merkel, former German Chancellor. I was shaking my head because if the Prince had heard.... he would simply ban Nigeria from pilgrimage- Hajj for as long as he wishes.

I hope this woman gets assistance and is released

Dubai knew it is unethical that is why they jailed her for washing their dirty linen in the public.

If you travel well, you’d know that these things happen even if you are white. As the reporter said, she was actually freed after a few hours. But before then, she had posted video online. They allowed her enjoy Dubai and punished her when she was about leaving. With a little patience, she could have avoided this. Person wey Dey find party rice no suppose to fear dance. Nigeria doesn’t have the best reputation internationally so when you travel, expect to be double checked and triple checked at immigration. Stay clean and legal and you’ll be fine (mostly).

Always read the laws before going to any country. She was in the country with family visa which is husband and wife plus kids not sister. Offence one. You now went online despite being in the wrong to cry foul and tarnish the country. Offence two. Nigerians should learn to stop cutting corners. Regardless Nigeria should do all they can to rescue her

A due diligence is important about the country you've not been to. If Nigeria is OK, Wetin I won go do for UAE but Buhari and his geng of thieves have destroyed everything beyond redemption.

Na same oil and gas wey these people get we also get but successive devilish government ensured we go there as almost slaves instead of staying back and enjoying our country.

Before you mention population differences, kindly note that at a time, Nigeria didn't know what to do with her wealth that we had to order for a party calling on all black race to Nigeria for a whole month. Meanwhile we didn't have power.

Imagine if we fixed our power, rails and waterways, by now, we will be competing with China in terms of cheap labor and productivity

Yea. I won’t deny the fact that I had to answer few extra questions sometimes but I never experienced any serious racism/discrimination before entering any country.
Be good, obey the law of the land and you’ll be fine.
