HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF EGBE MEKUN

Egbe Mekun, popularly called Egbe, is a historic town located in the Yagba West local government area of Kogi State, Nigeria, West Africa.
Historians and scholars from Egbe has wrote about the founder of the town, even folklores have it that the founder of Egbe was a Yoruba prince.
Kelae or kelaye was a young prince who lost his succession to the throne of the Alafin oyo.
Prof. J.A Atanda wrote about the reason for migrating in his book an introduction to yoruba history.and two of his point might be the reason for KELAE'S migration.

*Sheer ambition of some adventurous members of the royal families to carve out new areas of influence and power for themselves.
* Political crisis
The stories told are all about political crisis that might have happened in oyo-ile.
to fact check let go back to Oyo old empire
Oba Ajaka succeed oranmiyan as the Alafin of Oyo but was found to lack leadership abilities and he was desposed because he lack military virtue and allow his sub-chief too much independence.
Sàngo became the new Alafin Oyo the known deity of thunder and lightning.
Some believed kelae is a relative of Sángó if not his blood because of the way sango showed up to fight battle for Egbe and because of the kind of powers kelae possess.some might debunk the story but all we know his kelaye was from a royal family just like the founder of yagba (iya-agba)
After the death of Alafin Sángó,Ajaka came back to the throne and was succeeded by Oba Kori who fought and won all the known Oyo metropolitan.
Stories that might have left to the migration of kelae:
*Around 1500 to 1535 during the reign of Onigbogi Oyo suffered military defeats at the hands of the Nupe led by Tsoede.
It's most possible the prince and princess fled Oyo because the king himself Oba Onigbogi ran to the kingdom of Borgu.
The Nupe sacked the capital, destroying Oyo as a regional power until the early 17th century.
*Other research might say they fled after the death of Karan.
Kanran, or Karan, was an Alaafin of the Oyo Empire. He succeeded Oba Odarawu.
He was considered a fierce and tempestuous leader, and is said to have subjected his subjects to severe punishments. He inspired the Oyo proverb, 'O nika ninu ju Karan lo' ('He is as cruel as Karan').
As a result of his propensity to harm his own people, a plot to terminate him or get him to abdicate the throne was entered into by his nobles. He was rejected by the Oyo Mesi (the principal counselors of the state) but defied the subsequent pressure to commit suicide. When the army entered his city, Kanran reportedly climbed onto the roof of his palace and shot arrows at them until the building was set on fire.it is highly possible that they escaped this to find a new home.
....
One fact we know is Kelae left Oyo because of political instability in the 15th and the 17th century.
Some Folklore believe Kelae while trying to check if he has neighbor climbed the mount named after him and saw smoke which he tracked to Ogga there he met with the princess iya-agba who was his lost relative,iya-agba was still scouting for a nice place to stay with her emissaries and children. kelae told princess iya-agba that he has seen a nice location at Ijodo and told her to come over to be her neighbor.
Iya-agba settled in the present Akata while kelaye went to ijodo.
Kelaye lived separately and co-ordinated the affairs of his own people....

To be continued.....

That is why history is good. Many of us don't travel far an we don't know history. This really affect us and that's why many people are arguing with you. I have known Egbe for a long time. People used to go to their hospital in 70s 80s etc for treatment.

The hospital still stand till today even without support from any government, it even nw has a midwifery sch......some Canadian doctors are still there till date

Travelling is the major factor of exposure and one of the major factors of education......I won't even bother to argue with someone that never travel anywhere.....my first time of leaving SW was when I was going for NYSC in plateau state in 2015, b4 then I use to think the rest of Nigerians r not exposed

Even some of my friends confirmed that Egbe is far more developed than some of there home town in ogun state not too far from lagos despite the influence of being close to lagos

Some Egbe were hard working people that traveled all the way to Lagos to do any job they could find.

This was used against one of their sons during election in the fifties. Though he was the son of a prominent physician and political activist.

You got that right. I quite agree with you. There is dignity in labor.

if you remember Ajao that became one of the biggest landlord in Lagos then, he had been a load carrier before he made it rich.
