I believe it's time for the Nigerian Govt to make the age of consent 16yrs old.
Am speaking as a gen y parent.
I noticed the gen z and alpha are growing so rapidly unlike our time. And thanks to the internet, because they were born into the internet age, unlike ours when we knew about the internet while we were in adulthood.
Most kids now get admitted into the higher school of learning averagely between the ages of 16 - 17 yrs old.

My daughter is a case study. She's 16 yrs and about to get admission into the University, she asked me if I was still going to put her on parental control, and my answer was yes, I told her she hasn't reach the age of consent yet, but I could see that frown on her face, Like Going 100level and her phone still under parental control.
Well I told her if the govt can change the age of consent to 16yrs only then I will allow her do lots of thgs without my supervision, but as it is now till you get to the age of 18yrs before I could let go alot of things under my supervision.

Haaaaa....

Be like say konji don dey hold you ontop one small girl abi...

No try am o... Wait for 2 more years let her ripe finish, na you go still chop am cheesy.

Now to be more serious bro: the age 16 is not about development of sexual organs or growing faster than normal, it's about the age a lady is considered being fully part of the deal. She must be willing to give her full consent. This is an internationally acceptable age for 18+ related activities.

Didn't you read where I said am using my daughter as a case study undecided, and beside there are countries where age of consent is 15yrs like Brasil, my daughter was aware of some south America nations which their age of consent is 15. She said they do celebrate age of 15 "Quinceañera" in Latin American countries just to justify herself.

Hmmm oh,

That's a one sided reasoning OP,so because of your daughter and the few ones wey feel say them done get feathers na why they go change age of consent.

I believe 18 is still the best so far, not a majority of Teens in Nigeria has that opportunity as our Daughter to be exposed to experience as you said.

For those that might say age is just a number, it ain't just a number its also entails the level of experience one has.

I understand, but am also looking at ages of the average Nigerian been admitted in our schools of higher learning, which are between the ages of 16 - 17 yrs of age. During my own time, the gen y it was between 18 - 21yrs.

That should be their business, and it shouldn't affect the general public... technically anyone in the University should have reached age of consent, its is at the cost of the parents and you people should not be looking for backup from the government on your personal decisions of catch them young.

A lot of things were kept where they are for some reasons, if we keep changing rules to some of these things we won't have a serious backing to rules anymore giving raise to a dilapidated society.

You have a point, but looking at it from my daughter's angle, she started primary at age of 5yrs which is not bad and secondary at 10yrs, but at pry 1 they were taught the works of pry 2, and pry 2 the works of pry 3 and so on. And that's how most average private schools works in Nigeria today.Beside change is constant. And as a large society we need to be flexible, the world is evolving so fast, we need to keep up with the pace.

Age of consent should be 19 . Physical maturity is different from mental maturity. More adults are behaving like kids. Exposure to Internet doesn't accelerate mental maturity.

Aba, bros abeg take am easy. If you know what most of this kids are up to, you won't be saying this.
You look at them as small kids, if only you know what is in that their small head. Although if channeled towards the right direction, you see them manifesting great things.

Capital No. Because your daughter is going to University at age 16 doesn't mean she has reached that age where you can allow her into the world without the parental monitoring you've been giving her. There's still a kind of disconnection between that big body and the brain of a juvenile. I was a teacher in the past and I know these young girls don't know much and are just beginning to grow into those big bodies.

In Brazil which you cited as an example, you see 12 year olds getting STDs. Even in America. But laxity of parenting and poverty are bringing the same problems here. Now, imagine if everyone is told that it's okay to have sex with a 16 year old.

They are exposed to bad things at earlier stage. Try to have critical discussion with many of them, they are empty. Many young girls are now being trafficked for sex . Others are being killed for ritual purposes or organ harvests. They think they are wise.

In most developed countries school age entry is five, while the age of entry into the university is usually from 18. But this is Nigeria, we’re all in a rush hence the crisis with ur daughter. You have prepared ur baby for exams but now you’re wondering if you’ve prepared her enough for adult living which incidentally is more important. Once she leaves for the university she has left home and will only be a visitor from then on. Putting age restrictions on the phone of an undergrad who is about to be hit with the real deal seems like a beggar’s wishes! Just talk with her on ur experiences in school, those promising kids that lost their way back then, the hows, the whys.... and pray the home training she has received so far will carry her through. If not, that phone password thingy means nothing to these Gen Z kids who are adept at bypassing almost any block online nowadays!

It is horrifying that Tinubu's handlers and supporters know that he has no capacity to debate nor govern Nigeria effectively and yet, out of selfish and tribalistic reasons, they are pushing him on.
