Compliments of the season, with this festive period upon us if you plan to travel with your vehicle (that was imported less than 6 years ago) I appeal that you reconsider that decision putting into consideration those sheets of papers known as "custom papers". The Nigerian Customs Service officials are not smiling this season and are willing to impound any vehicle for irregularity on its custom papers, you would be forced to discharge all your personal effects from the said vehicle and look for an alternative means of transportation to arrive at your destination. This option is often after you and your vehicle have been detained, you would of course be offered bail with tough conditions – remember you are probably about 300km away from your base and about 250km to your destination – meeting those conditions is no tea party.

By the time you arrive at impound or the warehouse, humility would have become your nature at what point you will be in a hurry to comply to anything they require/request of you. You will also understand that your case is minimal or even insignificant in comparison to other cases on ground especially when you see the pound of exotic vehicles impounded and you hear discussions around you of the imminent forfeiture of some of those exotic vehicles to the Government.

Currently, we have about seven (7) Customs check point between Ijebu-Ode and Asaba. The sad fact is that most of these issues are caused by the collusion of certain Customs officials and unauthorized clearing agents, then another set of Customs officials would deal with your situation on the highway which is often frustrating and beyond any reasonable explanation you can give. The experience is not one that you would wish your enemy, especially not during the end of year festivities.

Our Christmas piece of advice to all who might fall into this category is to take your custom papers to any customs office/unit to confirm the validity of those documents or contact us to help you verify the status of your documents (before you set off rather than looking for help when you have been caught defaulting in any way) via any of the links below;
