No, no one can stay there like that when a ship is under way in deepwater.

A quick look at every ship's Hull shows the load line markings, even if the vessel was returning ballast (which I know its not the case) the thrusters would surely submerged for that length of a journey depending on the density of the sea water, environmental temperature and ballast weight.

To answer your curiousity, they would apparently have been in the thruster hold of the vessel, and only come out when the vessel has approached port where the water is relatively shallow and all engines dead.


Another quick look at the vessel shows that she is not under her own power (as at when the pics was taken) and only being towed by an escort notated vessel or moored by way of dropping her anchor to run weather pattern. I hope uou understand why and how they could stay there now like that....

I can remember vividly around 2002 when I caught 11 of such stoways in my vessel at the Warri port. As the shipping agent, I quickly Alert the police who came to whisk them away that night. Only 4 them to be returned the next day after a thorough investigation. Guess what? Those guys have been there 4 like 5 days. They followed the ship from Lagos thinking she was going to Europe only to find it in Warri.
