Career prospects are another reason why we swamp the big cities, but at the latest here a differentiation must be made - not every region and every city offers similarly good opportunities in this regard. Apart from that, the prospect of work is often not the decisive factor that makes a city particularly attractive for young people.

Sometimes the reputation that precedes a city is enough. Take Lagos as an example: In public perception, probably the Nigerian swarm city par excellence – although there are a number of cities in which the number of 20 to 34-year-olds has increased significantly more in recent years. Nevertheless, the city is considered hip, vital, a cultural center, a forge for up-and-coming entrepreneurs. Many are here for that very reason, and their example in turn attracts others. As in other big cities, this leads to a certain concentration of young people in certain regions.
If you then look at the demographic distribution at the nationwide level, a growing imbalance becomes apparent. It also has to do with reversing the idea of ​​living in the suburbs and working in the inner city. People are now more often looking for the opposite route, namely a job in the surrounding area that can still be reached by relatively easy commuting from the nearest large city. In other words, where supposedly “real” life takes place for everyone.
