SA President Cyril Ramaphosa has lost the political support of the ruling ANC party and is "very likely" to announce his resignation as head of state in the next few hours.

Ramaphosa will also resign as president of the ANC and will pull out of the race to be re-elected in just over two weeks' time.

In accordance with the Constitution, Deputy President David Mabuza, a former premier of the Mpumalanga province, will step in as acting president until Parliament votes for a new president.

It is expected that whoever is elected as the next ANC president mid-December will be sworn in as state president at a special sitting of Parliament at the end of the month.

The main opposition DA party has tabled a motion, arguing for Parliament to be dissolved and for an early election to be held next year.

News24 has spoken to a range of senior politicians and civil servants close to the president's decision, that is likely to trigger a credibility crisis for South Africa.

A source close to talks said Ramaphosa did not have to be convinced of the case to resign. The insider said Ramaphosa argued that it was in the best interest of the stability of the country for him to quit.

"There is nothing we can do now," the source said.

Ramaphosa to address the nation this evening

Vincent Magwenya, Ramaphosa's spokesperson, said the president would address the nation "soon". He said the president was still considering his options.

"The primary concern in the president's mind is the stability of the government and the country."

Ramaphosa has run out of options after a Section 89 panel, headed by former chief justice Sandile Ngcobo, found that he may have violated the Constitution and anti-corruption laws in his Phala Phala game farm dealings.

News24 understands the president's legal advisors told him that, although they took the view that the Ngcobo report was "full of contradictions, flaws and mistakes", chances of successfully challenging it in court was not guaranteed.

"Which court will rule that a report by a former chief justice is irrational?" one source said.

Ramaphosa also does not want to put himself through a "public trial" in Parliament, in an impeachment hearing.

Independent panel finds Ramaphosa has case to answer

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa could be impeached after an independent panel found he "may be guilty of a serious violation" of the country's constitution.

The panel, appointed by the speaker of South Africa's parliament, found "prima facie" evidence that Ramaphosa violated his oath of office and breached anti-corruption laws.

The president is under fire over an alleged cover-up of a robbery that took place at his private farm, Phala Phala, in 2020.

An estimated $4 million (€3.85 million) was taken during the robbery, raising questions about how the president acquired the cash and whether he declared it.

Ramaphosa denied any wrongdoing

"I categorically deny that I have violated this oath in any way, and I similarly deny that I am guilty of any of the allegations made against me,” Ramaphosa said in a statement issued by the South African presidency.

"The conclusions of the panel require careful reading and appropriate consideration in the interest of the stability of government and that of the country," the presidency added.

He previously had said the cash was from proceeds from the sales of game.

Parliament will examine the findings in a one-day sitting on December 6 when it will decide whether to push ahead with a vote to impeach the president

Ramaphosa's mysterious millions

The robbery was first brought to light in June by Arthur Fraser, the country's former head of the State Security Agency and a close ally of South Africa's disgraced former President Jacob Zuma.

Fraser alleged robbers targeted Ramaphosa's game farm in the northern Limpopo province, where they found $4 million in foreign currency hidden inside furniture.

The criminals were apprehended and the money recovered from them, the affidavit says, but the men were then paid to buy their silence.

Fraser opened a case against Ramaphosa and senior police officials responsible for the president's security.

Saw the news and wanted to post this morning but changed my mind because the ANC will save him like they do. They constitute 60% in the Assembly. Well, let's wait between now and Dec 10.

Arthur Is a Zuma ally... but can game at Phala Phala give Zuma such money? Not true.

Hi Fergie!

He's definitely resigning, remember the ANC is split in half. The Zuma camp want him out and it's time for revenge coz Ramaphosa had been purging them using the step aside rule if implicated in corruption.

He said he is studying the report and did not attend Parliament to answer questions yesterday or so.

He also said he is disposed to stepping-aside, though I think the weight of evidence is heavy. I see him slightly surviving this period but will eventually leave.

Dlamini should go and settle with the Court before Dec 9 and release every detail on lockdown regulations during COVID-19.

Zweli Mkhize should rest abeg. I dislike Zuma coming back in proxy, not that I like Rama sef.

Hmmmm, Ramaphosa has cancelled all his engagements and Venezuela state visit. That means state business has come to a halt. Presidents personal business shouldn't affect the running of the state, and therefore I think it's a clear indication he's going.

But I'm sad cry Why didn't you like Rama, haau! shocked grin

And there's no clear successor from the good camp (Ramaphosa's camp).

I can see how some brainless people attacking Nigeria because of south Africa politicans. And these people are mainly from southeast the same people that called the country a zoo and still want to rule the zoo.

And for your information Nigeria and south Africa don't practice same system of government of course if parliament dont want use as their leader or you are
smelling impeachment you better resign honorably before they disgrace you.

Parliamentary system of government is the most acceptable system of governance because constitution will surely be your guidance.

I prefer him to Zuma, tbh I don't hate him but Mbeki has always been my man....

Mabuza even cancelled the AIDS Day speech at Free State today. ANC NEC will meet tonight and likely slate Cyril. So, he is likely to pull the plug any moment. My complaints of him leaving is that he didn't do his supporters any good at all, somehow weak politically.

Zweli has his own Digital Vibes corruption case and unless on the conference floor someone gets 25%, Zweli is riding unopposed.

I know Dlamini will want to put her head in but Zweli looks Zuma 2.0

Well done. You're well schooled.

Nevertheless, Tinubu will not be voted into power come 2023. That's why you spilled your bile against the Igbos in your first paragraph.

I'm not Igbo and I don't need to be Igbo before feeling the heat of a hailing country because of irresponsible, defective, malignantly corrupt leadership system. They became worse than what they came to correct and so, in 2023, they will be out whether you like it or not.

Soon, Nigeria will have a stable system where political leadership positions will be too hot for ineptitude of the present sort.

Lol dude, Mbeki is long gone and wont be returning - you needed a modern favourite grin

Yeah, he was considered as someone who prefers consultantion.amd unity - some viewed that as weakness.

I can stomach Zweli Mkhize but would hate another Zulu president so soon. KZN tends to play tribal politics which is not good for the country. So him and NDZ are a definite no no.

Hoping Zondo or Mapisa-Nqakula take over in the meantime. The DA has proposed early elections should Ramaphosa go, but I don't see the ANC supporting that coz they're 8n such disarray at the moment. But come 2024 they're out or it's a coalition.

I don't want him to go either just because of the hawks waiting. Money and power... this is a man who is arguably a multi-billionaire before he joined politics, just don't get it.

The problem with that is it will serve a bad precedence for future and other current leaders. We should normalise good governance and sanctioning those that break the law, however popular they are.

I just wish Rama can atleast go through the parliamentary process but maybe he feels that would be too embarrassing if he's gonna get booted out anyway afterward.

ANC wouldn't support it, that's a given. I know Mbeki isn't coming back but just like him.

I thought Mabuza will take charge until the ANC conference ending 10th Dec. Nqakula, the Speaker? The one that was accused of collecting over R5m when she was in Defence?

Infact, nobody is clean.... Don't wanna break my skull!

That's why I stopped voting for them after Mbeki was ousted. 2024 they're joining the opposition benches.

I don't think there's much clarity as to who should take over, but after Mbeki I can't remember if Baleka Mbete took over as Speaker until Kgalema Montlhanthe from nowhere took over for a year or 2 as a compromise candidate.
