Holidays like Christmas bring people together. Families often get together around this time. Gatherings of family members around the holidays have long been customary. Families from all over the world essentially gather to have fun, exchange stories and enjoy one another’s company. However, family members with various personalities may find it to be rather overpowering. Past family conflict also makes things more difficult. In the worst situation, visits with family might be uncomfortable rather than enjoyable.

You know how fantastic it feels to successfully manage distant family relationships throughout the year and to be able to put up with bothersome excesses because everyone was occupied? That’s not how holidays work. While on vacation, everyone has time for everyone. Those excesses are frequently thrust in your face around the holidays, and when it’s all over, you’re expected to smile, hug them tenderly, and say you had fun and would return the following year—even if you both know that you’re already making plans to avoid going through the hell again.

For those who have loving families, both immediate and extended, and who cannot imagine missing a holiday spent with family and friends, you may wonder what the problem is.
