This is from just a bag. In all, I did not buy seed yam, what I planted was the head cut off from the yam we bought from market. Imaging the return here in percentage.

Do you know that the taste of this yam is different from the one in market? after eating this yam, I vowed not to buy yam again in market.
In fact, what I have now can carry me throughout the year.

Let's compare the yam-in-sack farming with the conventional method of farming yam.
1. You can get your produce in 7/8months as against the normal 10/11months
2. Minimal labour against the tedious work involved from land clearing to harvesting
3. Weeding is almost zero here
4. Building Yam trellis easier here
5. The yield is enormous here
6. Nutrients conserved and reused, not washed away.
7. The taste is better
8. Start up capital very small
9. The market price cheaper since the cost of production is lower
10. Easy to harvest
11. Less injured yam after harvest.

you did a great job no doubt. however this method is better for subsistence farming and not for commercial scale. so, comparing this method with the conventional style may not be obtainable as the output from the latter wl definately outweigh your aboved listed benefits.

Before you fully launch into any business, you have to do small trial run, during this period, you have to identify some key performance index that will be instrumental to the expected result. Once you have succeeded in getting your targeted result, you can boldly say you have what is called
Proof of concept.
In the coming year, all I need is to expand the process. Now from the present to commercial quantity
Am going to open a thread on that once I start.
If I can try about 100 sacks, who says I can't multiply it by 10.

Soil
Quality and size of seed yam
Time of planting
Size of sack

These are parameters that played major role in the result obtained.

The issue I have is getting soil of that magnitude. Else, I would have gone for it since. How can I go about that? I have more than enough manure but the problem is getting soil.

This is an investment. You can put top soil in cement bags as much as you can in any location you found it available and then transport to your farm

Soil is platform for seed germination. In recent time, plants are grown without soil. Soil provides support and nutrients for root development and plant growth. Irrespective of soil type available in your area, what's so important is the nutrient content. From my experience, manure and compost are major source of the needed nutrients. Compost is easy to produce and manure can be sourced from any nearby chicken/Pig farm. Soil rich in compost manure gives outstanding result

I don't understand what you mean when you say you cannot get soil for your garden. Do you not live on land or something? undecided

And speaking of manure, have you considered composting to build soil? undecided

If you plant an unhealthy seed yam, definitely, the yield will not be encouraging. The size and quality of the seed yam among other variables affect the output. The bigger the size of the seed yam, the better. The potential energy differs according to seed yam size. Yam infested with disease or with rotten parts will definitely not do well.

I can't just start digging any land now grin. Using compost solely to build soil will be a waste of compost, believe me. Best is just to get good soil and add lots of compost to it.

You can use pretty much any sand so long as it is not salt-laden sand. I mix playground sand(sandy sand) with compost for my container plants and that works great for planting. What you need is soil with good drainage and you can add nutrients to it using compost. Compost is there for you to make your own good soil, so you don't first have to have to start first with good sand. undecided

Time of planting.
Planting yam seed at the right time gives the expected output. The best time to plant is around February/March, before or after the first rain. Planting this period helps you optimize the rainfall fully and get the best out of it.

Size of the sack.
This is another important factor in yam farming. You can use cement bag if your target is to produce multiple yam seed. However, if your aim is to produce big yam, the bigger the sack, the better

What if you don't mind watering your plants regularly on your own, doesnt that then mean you can pretty much plant anytime and expect same or even better yield? undecided

Pls see the other guy's take differently. Try not to view it as trying to belittle the wonderful experience being shared by the op. Some of us are sincerely looking at exploring alternative to growing yams like doing it in sacs, though i already planted about a thousand using the old style on ground in November.
