I have a bit of an urgent situation.

Friend of mine recently enrolled for their NIN number from the UK. They urgently need to renew their passport, which has expired.

After enrolment at one of the centres in the UK, they were told that the BVN they submitted was incorrect and they should submit another, they only have the one BVN given to them by their bank when they opened the account when in Naija.

They have explained to the enrolment center in the UK, that they do not have any other BVN, and that they need the NIN to renew their passport urgently.

The enrolment centre keeps saying they are forwarding the information to the NIMC and awaiting their response, but this has been going on for 3 months.

Their passport has expired and unclear what to do next.

Any advice?

The only thing that I can think of is at the time of her BVN registration, she was still under her maiden name, but this was all asked for and supplied at the NIN enrolment at one of their UK enrolment centres.

Did anyone have any issue enrolling for NIN abroad if BVN was under their maiden name?

See as far as I know it's NIN that is needed for passport acquisition.
BVN has nothing do with it atleast in nigeria. Maybe it's a different process in UK.

This are your options
She will need to find a way to update the maiden name on her BVN if she wants to continue the passport application in UK.

In Nigeria, even with her absence she can get the NIN updated to what she wants.

She don't need BVN to get a Nigerian passport but she definitely need BVN number to get a Nigerian NIN.

She has a BVN, given to her by her bank before she came to the UK; before having an NIN became mandatory (or even asked), only on trying to renew her passport did she find out that an NIN is required. After enrolling for her NIN at a UK enrolment centre, the NIMC have come back to the enrolment centre that she needs to do BVN modification, but I do not see how she can modify her BVN information outside of the country.

I am guessing that her maiden name is what is on her BVN, different from the married name on her expired passport, but this information was given at the enrolment centre, they didn’t mention that this would be an issue. She cannot possibly be the only person that left Nigeria with BVN in her maiden name, and passport in her married name, when at the time BVN was only required to open an account, and no correlation was made between this and an NIN, even before an NIN became mandatory.

This looks like a terrible loophole.

What you need to do is get the NIN processed in Nigeria since they don't ask for all that BVN stuff.

Once you have your NIN slip you can go ahead and apply for your passport there.
