There is absolutely no need to act surprise and abandon the pregnancy or responsibilities for the baby.
If as a man and you felt the pregnancy might not be yours then opt in for a DNA test.

In Nigeria, it is not unusual for a man or woman to abandon the immediate family and move on. Indeed, it is becoming a normal occurrence for a spouse especially the man, to abandon his responsibilities in the home and abscond in order to move in with another lover or even to an entirely unknown place to avoid responsibilities. However, for those engaging in this act and those encouraging such, it is time to desist, else a jail term is imminent as the law now frowns on such act and has made it a criminal offence.
No longer will the law accept such as a family issue as the VAPP Act has made it a crime to abandon one’s spouse, children or other dependants under the domestic offences section.

A provision like this is why the Violence Against Persons and (Prohibition) Act (VAPP) 2015 is described as a child of necessity in the fight against violence dominating the domestic and public space in Nigeria.

Section 16 of the VAPP Act makes provisions for cases of abandonment of children, spouse and other dependants without means of sustenance. Section 16 (1) provides that any person who abandons his or her spouse, children and other dependents without means of sustenance is liable for punishment with maximum three years imprisonment or N500,000 fine or both.

Section 16 (2) says anyone who attempts to abandon his children, spouse and other dependants without means of sustenance is liable for punishment with maximum two years imprisonment or N200,000 fine or both. 16 (3) provides that any person who incites or counsels another to abandon his or her spouse, children and other dependents without means of sustenance is liable for punishment with maximum two years imprisonment or N200, 000 fine or both and 16 (4) states that any person who  receives  or  assists another  who, to his  or her  knowledge, committed this offence  is  considered an accessory after  the fact  and is  liable  on conviction  to a term  of imprisonment with maximum one year imprisonment or N100,000 fine or both.

It is indeed time for dead beat parents to sit up and live up to their responsibilities while neighborhood counselors that give inciting advice must now watch what they encourage else they face the wrath of the law.

Well, it says so right there that the Law applies to both men and women who abandon their responsibilities.

This is not men bashing, it can apply to both gender. Imagine Madam commot for house or Japa to another country without let her husband know. She come leave her hubby to fend for their children. it has happened to men too. You do not hear about it because it is embarassing to even talk ablit it.

I and the OP had a long argument about some other issues on some other thread which prompted her creating this thread so you probably do not know we’re or how the argument started from as such you may not have fully grasp what I was saying to her in the context I said it.

Unfortunately, naija no dey enforce law like dat. Na only murder or robbery case they take seriously. My ex uncle left my aunty with my cousins. The man never said money and missed my cousins birthday and wedding

If people would come out and report these cases, at least we can start from there. How many cases of abandonment are actually reported by the victims in those cases?

1. This happened a long time ago, then the law did not care.
2. NIGERIA has a long way ago because civil matters are not a prority at all. In the UK , it is. But naija Na murder, kidnapping or armed robber case they take seriously.
3. To report is to spend money , they fit bill for any case.
4. The best thing apart of the law is to report the elders of the irresponsible spouse and that one is question mark? Will the irresponsible one even listen.
