I lost my mother in January 2019. She was a state government pensioner receiving monthy pensions through a new generation bank in Nigeria. Three years after her death, I was advised by my siblings to go check in her bank if she left any cash there before her death.
I approached the bank and they referred me to probate registry to obtain bank certificate before they would disclose the account balance. I obeyed and got the bank certificate from probate office and the bank revealed the balance to be over N2m naira. I then went back to probate with the figure and was asked to pay 10% of the amount which was about N214k.
The processed the letter of Administration after
abou a couple of months and I took it to the said bank.
Surprisingly I was told the funds in the account was monthly pension paid into the account after her death. That I'm not entitled to the funds. That it will be returned to the employer (ie the government of my state). I was mad. I asked them why did they initially advise me to go to probate office and spend over 200k if they know I can't access the fund?
Please is that how it works? Is there any option left for me? This is cash at bank!
