Woman scalds sister’s throat with hot knife over N4,000

Ogadimma Elom, 10, is currently in the hospital receiving treatment over the neck injury she suffered when her blood sister, Success, attacked her with a knife. Success may come across as the legendary wicked sister which she is actually not. She only took the law into her own infuriated by Ogadimma’s pilfering habit which had become practically incurable and uncontrollable.

Ogadimma is a primary four pupil of a school at Oyingbo, in the Lagos Mainland Local Government Area of Lagos State. She lives with Success, 20, in a single room apartment at No 1, New Site, Olokodana Extension Street, Iya Agan area of Oyingbo in the state. It was the young girl’s stealing habit that reportedly led her sister to scald her face with a hot knife on the fateful day.

The Eloms are indigenes of Isamgbo, in Ebonyi State, where their parents live. It was reported that long before the incident, the LMNG school authority had written to Success asking her sister to stop coming to the school after she was suspected of stealing money from her class teacher. Not daunted by the decision of Ogadimma’s school authority, Success reportedly is in talks with another school where she intends to put her pilfering sister. It was reported that Ogadimma had twice extended her habit to Success in the past. On those occasions, Success had only reportedly reprimanded her and asked her to desist from the act.

Sometime in July, 2011, Ogadimma had alleged to have stolen N2,000 belonging to her sister. Initially, the girl reportedly denied taking the money but after series of threats on her, she allegedly confessed to the crime. Once she confessed that she already spent the money, Success had reportedly called their mother back in the village. The mother had requested Success to bring the thieving girl home which the latter promised to do early September. But on Wednesday, 24 August, 2011, Ogadimma’s ‘sins’ came to a head when she allegedly stole Success’ N4, 000 again.

That was about two weeks before she was due back in Isamgbo, their land of origin. Success, however, would not let this go unattended to. Upon her return from work, she went to where she kept her money but did not find anything there. She apparently knew she needed not search for too long before she would know how her money disappeared. She promptly confronted Ogadimma about the money. The young girl denied taking her sister’s money, but Success was unconvinced with her defence. Knowing that her younger sister must have stolen the money, she was determined she would use that incident to make her stop her bad habit. At that time, Success was reportedly trying to mend a broken plastic in the house. To mend the plastic, she said she would use a hot knife immersed into fire for a long time.

That was the time Success called her sister to where she was seated and demanded that Ogadimma confessed to her crime or she (Success) would inflict injury on her. As is the trademark of people of such characters, Ogadimma denied knowing where her sister’s money was, and at a stage, Success allegedly picked the hot knife from the fire, grabbed her sister, tied her hands to her back and used the hot object to beat the young girl in the face and her throat. Naturally, the young girl cried for help and this drew the attention of their neighbours in the compound, who immediately summoned the head of the community, one Mr. Odafe Ovuefor, who rescued the girl from her vexed sister. Within minutes, Ogadimma’s face up to her throat swelled up. Saturday Mirror asked Success what made her take the laws into her hands, she claimed that her N4, 000 that her younger sister stole that day was her last money in the house.

“This is not the first time that she would be stealing my money. Before now, she stole N2,000 when I was away in the market. I reported the matter to the people in the yard,” she claimed Narrating what made her scald her sister this time around, Success continued her story, “When I came home that Wednesday, I went to where I kept my money, but I realised that the N4, 000 I was left with was missing. I became mad immediately and I called her to ask her who took my money.

She denied taking the money initially until I marked her face with the hot knife. That was when she told me that she took the money and kept it with a female neighbour of ours. She then said that the neighbour that held the money for her gave her N1,000 out of it. My sister also showed me a boy in the neighbourhood that she spent the money with. The boy is called Chidebem.” When interrogated, Ogadimma did not deny stealing her sister’s money. She claimed that she used the N1,000 given to her by the neighbour to buy a toy gun, yoghurt and rice to eat. Success, however, said that she could not take the girl back to her mother in the village in this condition. She said she would wait until her wounds are healed before returning the girl. The community leader, Ovuefor, in company of some elders rescued girl, bought some medications for her and took both sisters to the Iponri Police Station for further investigation. The girl is reportedly receiving medical treatment at the moment.
