Black unemployment at highest level in 27-years

The August jobs report was dismal for plenty of reasons, but perhaps most striking was the picture it painted of racial inequality in the job market.

Black unemployment surged to 16.7 percent in August, its highest level since 1984, while the unemployment rate for whites fell slightly to 8 percent, the Labor Department reported.

"This month's numbers continue to bear out that longstanding pattern that minorities have a much more challenging time getting jobs," said Bill Rodgers, chief economist with the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University.

Black unemployment has been roughly double that of whites since the government started tracking the figures in 1972.

About 155,000 blacks got jobs in August, but the group's unemployment rate still went up because those jobs weren't enough to make up for all the people who started looking for work during the month.

However, the gain for whites of 211,000 jobs was enough to bring their unemployment rate down.

Overall, black men have it the worst, with joblessness at a staggeringly high 19.1 percent, compared to 14.5  percent for black women.

Latinos saw their unemployment rate remain unchanged at 11.3 percent in August. Unemployment remains at 9.1 percent for the country as a whole.

But that has always been the case,those at the receiving end feel the pain more.Blackman has to create his own world and his birth right is in africa.

Afrikan people need to be shocked out of our 'waking coma' and face the harsh realities of the world we are in. No one but ourselves is going to change our generally pitiful economic condition. This is a fiercely competitive world in which different groups compete against each other, whilst many of us are locked into an individualistic fantasy; thinking that success is a purely individual pursuit. Group identity, solidarity, trust, co-operation and accountability provide the platform for individuals to achieve economic success. This is why Afrikans are at the bottom of the economic pile wherever we live, despite the Oprahs, Bob Johnsons, athletes, entertainers etc.

No reason to expect identical employment rates across ethnic groups (or "races", I guess)

You need to see how black americans give birth to babies without any plan for proper training or education.
the highest level of education for many of them is High School(secondary school), with many dont finish or finished without good result.
many of them are not ready to work. I live with them and I interact with them.
75% of the have their first baby by or before age 18 years.
i believe they need to do something to change the trend.

yeah you right. black man has to create his own economy. create our own bidnessess. thats why i respect magic johnson. all the other black celebs like jay z and kanye west are only interested in drinkin cristal. fools. you are only as strong as your weakest link.

John Henrik clarke was one of them. there was james badwin, malcolm x,martin luther king, walter mosley etc

you know how americans are right ? short attention span. maybe the person who owned them just bought the computerized book reader thingy and just decided to get rid of all his books. nevertheless, i am a thrift store scavenger. i used to go to thrift stores all over chicago looking for gems. any books you buy in a thrift store will only cost 45 cents. does not matter how good the book is. americans have lost the art of reading and hence books are now viewed as a relic of the past. this is why you can buy em for so cheap.
