EDIT:

"Actually I looked at the thread again and I think the teacher guy is possibly, maybe sincere but his experiences are extremely sheltered and out of touch with the general population if this is the case.

I apologise if I've made false accusations so let's assume the information is just biased and not lies.

I don't want to make false accusations so I'll ask an actual Russian living in Russia about this, I'll be back tomorrow with a second opinion.

Still, I find this a bit fishy because no Russian has ever said as many positive things about Russi and especially Siberia as this guy."

The amount of fake news and false claims about Russia in this forum is alarming, I would strongly advice gainst believing all the claims made here.

I showed these threads to a Russian friend of mine who lives in Russia and she thought it was hilarious because it's just so blatantly untrue.

I've been to Russia, it's not the worst place in the world but it's not great like these people claim.

Be careful out here, do you research.

Russians are flocking out of the country, hundreds of thousands have already left and they have a labour shortage.
Clearly they want more people to come there but think about why so many left if it was such a great place.

Cheers.

That other thread about the guy who met a Russian lady in Dubai is just an attention seeker…

I am sure he has never traveled outside his village. I guess the mods don’t really care about the authenticity of some of these stories as long as they drive traffic to the site.

I would not fault that though because NL is someone’s business and his aim is to generate traffic.

But sometimes readers should apply discretion to ascertain what’s true and not.

Not everything going on here is true. Some are blatant and out right falsehood.

Use your wisdom!

That’s all…

This should be obvious but based on what I've seen people discuss here it seems a lot of nairalanders don't have common sense, they want to believe that they've tapped into a goldmine of information on how to find happiness and success.

I think some people need a reminder.

A lot of gullible people will always be around in the world…

NL not an exception. In fact gullible people are born everyday.

People that don’t want to think. They just want to be spoon fed information.

I have no patience with them!

I found a video of nigerian students protesting in russia because they were tricked into working and not getting paid:

It's not just easy money like they claim here.

Mixed opinion:

And one big nigerian youtube chann called tayno aina made a coverage about nigerian students getting scammed by these agencies in russia:

I'll ask a russian native about this tomorrow.

"So I asked my friemd about this.

We both came to the conclusion that the issue with this thread is that OP is in a very sheltered position and only experienced russia from a very priviliged point of view.
Also OP seems to only compare everything to nigeria which suggests that he is overexaggerating how good things are because anyone who has traveled a lot knpws that many things that are said to be grwat and amazing is mediocre at best when compared to many other countries.

Apparently russia is generally ok for black people and western europe is more racist because there are too many immigrants there.

I can personally confirm this, however I have experiemced racism by russians but only when they speak russian and I understand basics of russian.
Specifically working class people tend to be racist, the issue here is that OP hangs around academic and well to do people which is not average for russia.

Russian police are corrupt, in fact my friemd said that the biggest issue with russia is corruption.
Failed potential, could be one of the richest countries in the world but it's just extremely corrupt.

Russians are depressed people and this caused by lack of oppoturnity as most people feel like they've failed in life as russia is a very judgemental society so when they see an academic person like OP of course they put him on a pedestal.
I can personally confirm that russians are not happy people based on my experiences.

My friend said that a huge issue with russian people is generational trauma caused by neverending oppressive regime, if you criticize the government you do get in trouble and people have no slirit to fight against it because they think the battle has always been lost.
Everubody knows how corrupt and oppressive the country is but they choose to ignore it.

Putin is not popular, he's seen as a corrupt and oppressive dictator but people feel like that's just how it is and nothing can be done about this.
I've personally never heard russians say good things about putin.

Russian society revolves around working, people don't really express themselves and day to day life can be very meaningless and depressing.

Russians drink heavily, alcoholism is socially acceptable and it's how a lot of leople cope with depressing life there.

My friend said that unlike what OP said, young and middle aged russians are the rudest, most unfriendliest and that russians are generally rude.

Based on my personal experiences russian children and teenagers are very rude and nasty for some reason but I think middle aged people are ok, I've only had issues with young people.

I think OP is sincere here but I think this point of view is extremely biased.

So to all people reading this don't think that living in russia would be this amazing because OP is treated based on his special position, his experience is comparable to a european tourist going to a luxury holiday resort in nigeria thinking that's what the whole country is like.

This is a good thread but I think it lacks perspective, there's no research or stepling out of the lane to see what is outside this catered student circle.

So basically OP's experience may be amazing but russia is not amazing, if you think that going to russia will automatically make your life amazing this is wrong.

I wish OP a wonderful experience but be careful what you're feeding to nigerians her because this type of storytelling on social media makes peopls think that nigeria is a hellhole and every other country is paradise.

Funny how nigerians start loving their country once they go and live abroad properly.

This is why I always make sure that when I tell epople what my experiences of a country are like, I focus a lot on the context.

For example when I was in switzerland and people were smiling and friendly but then I asked swiss people and immigrants about it and they said that it's just being polite but they're not actually helpful or friendly people and a lot of them usffer from depression but they hide it with superficial smiles due to cultural standards."

Again, I apologise for making false accusations.

I think OP is totally legit and sincere but his point of view is unrealistic and biased which af first made me assume it's some marketing thing.

I advice people to look for different points of view and not getting too excited when one person in a very priviliged position says everything about some country is amazing and it's like paradise.

Do your reasearch, every country has major issues because humanity itself is fundamentally flawed and that's just life.

Rest if you don’t have something else to do.

My opinions and experiences don't create false expectations that might cause somebody to make a huge mistake thinking that moving to a far away country and paying a lot of money for it will be objectively the right choice.

All opinions are subjective, I said that different points of view are important exactly for this reason and that's why I didn't rely on my personal views alone but also asked a Russian.

My opinions are biased, all opinions are but in this case what matters is context.

Ok the first has nothing to do with russia. The students are protesting against the nigerian federal scholarship board who have refused to pay them their stipends

The last video was about agents, these agents are actually in Nigeria scamming their fellow Nigerians telling them that they can play football in Europe

I think this write up is biased and does not give the true picture of Russia.

1. Russia police are corrupt that is true.

2.Russians aren't depressed, a typical Russian doesnt smile to outsiders that could be a sign of depression but it is kinda of a cultural thing, Russians generally are cold people and hardly allow people into their circle but when you are accepted, they are loyal friends

3.putin is popular in Russia, many Russians are nationalist and patriotic, these was because they lost lot of people during the second world war. Most oppositions in Russia arent as popular as the western media potray them

4.It is weird to say that the op is living a privileged life just because he is a teacher, fact is that teachers are poorly paid in Russia. The op might have exaggerated some info but i dont think he is living a life of luxury.

5. Alcoholism is a big problem among Russian men but i think it is not only in Russia but all over cold Europe.

I think i will agree with you on one thing, most Nigerians exaggerate things and blow things out of proportion

Wahala for people wey no get sense and can easily fall for what they read online.

Imagine hyping Russia, like seriously? I will take living in Nigeria any day than living in Russia. I would rather live in a third world country than an authoritarian country.

I can't live in a country where 1 man is "god".You can't criticize, you can't voice your opinion, you can't remove him from office, you can't challenge him example Russia, China, North Korea etc.

In Russia, criticize Putin and 3 things will happen. Either you chop poison and die, go to jail and be forgotten or You mysteriously fall from a balcony and die. In the last one year alone, do you know how many Russians that have mysteriously fallen to their death or eaten poison? Just Google it.

Putin is just an idiot. How can one explain that Canada of 38m people has a bigger economy than a technological advance Russia of 130m people? How do we explain that Russia is more populated, has bigger landmass, has abundant natural resources, may even be technological superior to UK, Germany, France, Italy yet Russia economy is no where near to these countries?
Putin has been in power for 23 years and just wasted the time of his country pursuing greatness by military power and yet can't even beat common Ukraine after a year of fighting.

The saying that a country cannot do better than the vision of its leaders is true. A visionary leader with the enormous resources of Russia would have taken them to at least no 4 in the world economically.

Russia is a big disappointment. People who like Russia have one thing in common and that is hatred for the west. For me, I won't like Peter because of my hatred for Paul, I will only like Peter because of the value it brings. What value does Russia bring? Freedom- NO, Democracy- NO, Economy - NO, Entertainment-NO , Nuclear weapons- YES. Ok, use the nuclear weapons and wipe out US and the west naa- NO, only mouth dem get

Anyone who wants to hype Russia, na their business, we can see things with our own eyes.

Russians that are running to Argentina to have kids. Its not as if Argentina is doing that well economically. That pretty much tells me everything I need to know lol.

I recently did a research about why Russians are running to Argentina to give birth.

Second citizenship for the kids

Since Russians are banned by the west, they are looking for alternatives, Russians do not need visa to go to Argentina.

The head of the consular department of the Russian Embassy in Argentina, estimated that between 2,000 and 2,500 Russians moved to Argentina in 2022, many of whom, he said, were Russian women planning to give birth in the country.

One of the core advantages of an Argentinian passport is that its citizens could make short-term trips to 171 countries without a visa, including the EU, the UK and Japan, while obtaining a long-term US visa is “not very difficult”.

prior to the war, Russians could go visa-free to about 80 countries. And after Putin sent his troops into Ukraine, multiple European countries made it practically impossible for Russians to visit.

Apparently in south America, Argentina has one of the best healthcare services both private and public.

So i think it is a smart move

This makes Argentina better than Russia despite it's economic problems and Argentina isn't amongst the best countries in south America.

My russian friend managed to move to Serbia earlier this month and she says that she loves it and doesn't want to go back to russia.

Serbia and russia have good relations so russian citizens can go there visa free.
