Very often, I get people share resumes of friends or family members looking for jobs.

It takes a 15second review of the resume to know whether to proceed or not. Sometimes, the resume is so bad, it takes only a glance.

Whether you like it or not, your resume does say a lot about you and most organisations will form an opinion based on how your resume is presented.

In the same vein, having a great CV is still not enough.

It may get you a spot at the interview but it definitely will not secure the job for you.

So while you may engage our professional services to write a great CV, you also need to ensure that you have the required skills, competencies and experience for the job and also be able to effectively communicate that at the interview.

Making job and career moves requires a bit of everything, so, if you are not certain you have it all covered, get a career coach.

Life and It’s many Twists.

As a Consultant, many people think you have the magic wand to get them jobs.

I have since some funny irony of situations.

Some people really need the jobs but when you give them the opportunity, they are not ready to give it their all.

Some begin to tell you that the jobs are too tedious, tiring and affect them mentally.

Not all jobseekers are willing to do what it takes to keep the jobs within legality.

Most prefer not to leave their comfort zone and are fixated on certain expectation.

Some cannot go out of their way to go above and beyond and just want instant gratification.

Some prefer to do little job but earn higher pay like people that have more than 5 years experience.

If horses could fly, most of us would work in multi-nationals and other known bigger corporations.

Some get to places of work with less than 10 years of existence and they begin to compare these organizations with bigger brands where their friends work.

Some who claim to desperately need a job do not know why they want to work in that field.

Those people that they introduce to you from your churches or mosques as vulnerable and needy-people to assist usually end up not wanting to work harder than the others.

Most just want the sympathy associated with their situation and not necessarily the opportunity to change the situation.

When you do invite some people that have deliberately reached out to you for job assistance to come for interview, they will “ghost” you and never offer apologies until you call them to hear stories of they don’t have transport money.

To some that show up, being well-groomed is a scarce commodity. They come ill-prepared, out of place clothings and feel “woke”, that everything has to be casually done.

When you also send out invite for interviews, candidates would confirm attendance and on d-day, only less than 50% will turn up and then you hear excuses.

Some may start the job and quit less than 60 days and inform you that, “the stress is too much, i can’t be waking up by 5:30am everyday, the salary is too low for me, the job isn’t for me and the most ridiculous of all, “ the boss is too stingy”.

Hmm! unmet expectation and desire imbalance.

Most times when you hire candidates they come in like Saviour to deliver the organization from the Jaws of Thor.

When you get into an organization your first point of call is onboard, orientation, and build interactions with the people you will be working with so that you can better understand their process, systems, and people.

There would be processes and projects that the organization has in place that is perfect for their business model, don't just come in because you are hired to tell everyone they are doing it wrong that is why they hired you.

It is a very wrong mindset, and this is why some of you start having enemies from day one of entry, we are not saying don't do your job, but what job will you do really if you don't understand the process, product, and People?

If we can’t trust them to do the right thing, who can we trust?

Typically, your accountant or tax professional is a member of a professional body that values ethics and integrity.

However, sometimes you come across these professionals that go against these values.

Let me share a story.

Samantha was a woman of high moral character who always believed in doing what was right in her personal and business dealings.

When tax season arrived, a friend recommended an accountant, and Samantha felt confident her taxes were in good hands.

However, Samantha was taken aback when she received her completed tax returns. Her expenses had been inflated to reduce her tax liability, and she knew the figures were inaccurate.

Samantha confronted the accountant, who dismissed her concerns. He advised her to report more expenses for a lower tax liability, saying it was “normal”.

Samantha prioritized ethics and transparency over fraud, even if it meant paying higher taxes.

She found an accountant who shared her values and was committed to ethical practices and transparency. Together, they reported accurate returns.

This unusual story emphasises the need for ethical behaviour and transparency in financial reporting.

Unusual because one expects it to be the other way around.

Not saying the business owners are unethical, but they sometimes don’t know better.

The professionals should be trusted to do the right things.

Why Recruiters Ask Candidates "Tell Me About Yourself" in an Interview

Recruiters often ask #candidates the question "tell me about yourself" as a way to initiate the conversation and get to know the candidate better. This question is an open-ended prompt that allows the candidate to share information about their personal and professional background, their experience, skills, and achievements.

The answer to this question can give the #recruiter insights into the candidate's communication skills, ability to articulate their ideas, self-awareness, motivations, interests, and goals, which can be helpful in determining whether the position aligns with the candidate's career aspirations and long-term objectives.

The Idiots Curve.

Recently, I came across an interesting concept called the Idiots Curve. The basic rule of the Idiots Curve is, you will feel dumber before you get smarter. No matter how well informed or experienced we are, everyone has areas in which they are uninformed or struggle with. A person might be smart and skilled in many areas, but no one is an expert at everything.

In today's fast paced world of 2 minutes hack and quick fixes, it is common for a lot of people to feel pressured to fit in and when they do not, that feeling of inadequacy, incompetence and disdain sets in.

At every new level in your career, the Idiots Curve shows up. In the first 90 days of any new job, you tend to get a bit dumber before you get smarter. You overthink everything, you stop using your instincts and you presure yourself to perform.

Why is this so?

New environments, new people, new technology, new ways of working, information overload, uncertainties, culture shock and overwhelming expectations especially if you must hit the ground running.

While you can try to fight the "Idiots Curve", sometimes, it's just better to realise it is there and it's a natural feeling. It is #inevitable! It just shows up differently for each person. No matter how hard you fight it, you have to ride the curve. The only way to navigate is through it...just like life in itself.

Here are tips to help you wade through.

📌 Observe more, talk less.
In your first few days and weeks in a new environment, observe everything, say less. Pay attention to what is said and unsaid, the "unspoken rules". This may just be your cue.

📌 Ask as many questions as you can.
As a newbie, it is an opportunity for you to gather information, get historical data that will help you make informed decisions.

📌 Get support.
Identify someone you are comfortable talking with, ask for help, guidance and tips to help you navigate through in your first few months. You can't do it alone.

📌 Document.
You need to take notes. Document as much as you can. Scribble those new terminologies you hear, trust me when I say, they'll come in handy as time goes by.

📌 No ally.
Your first few weeks isn't the right time to form allies. Few months down the line, you just may discover you have been on the wrong side which can affect others' perception of you.

This feeling typically lasts between 2 to 3 months and things just starts to click. You get a hang of your deliverables and your emotions gets back to normal. For some, it may take longer depending on other critical factors like poor onboarding and lack of support. Those who are unable to cope, leave before the end of their probationary period because they struggled all through and got frustrated. This is yet, another reason for staff attrition before their 6th month.

Do it afraid. Even the most knowledgeable and talented have their fears.

My Leadership Insights!

Have you ever worked with a boss that you could second guess them or predict what they could say?

I remember when i was a Relationship Manager, one of my key responsibilities was establishing and growing both new and existing accounts and this sometimes involve scheduling interviews with clients so that both the ED and GM could interact and get to meet the clients.

When any of this visit is to take place, i would have taken my clients mostly the MD and the accountant through a Q & A session, drilling them about their companies stategy, account status, cashflow and why they needed the much desired loan.

I was so on point that if we went through 7 questions, at least 5 of these would be what we had practiced.

📍 Allow my Results do the Talking even in my absence.

📍 People i lead are a representation of Me and our collective values.

📍 Push, believe and support the team at any length and cost that i was dubbed, “Mother Theresa”.
